Mrs D just broke her bus

Post by DUDELUX »

Hey guys.
Mrs D has a 93 Pajero LWB.

Mrs D came home from picking up the kids from school this arvo, she walks in and says to me;
"I put my foot on the brake pedal, and it went straight to the floor, is that supposed to happen??"
My reply was "No, its not"

So I went and took a looksee, walked out onto the driveway, and saw that something was leaking from the front drivers side wheel.
So I jacked it up, took off the wheel and there seemed to be quite alot of fluid everywhere, so I knew theres a leak somewhere.
I turned the car on, and got her to push the brake pedal in, and as soon as she did, a spurt of brake fluid shot out of the brake hose, which is what I had assumed from looking at it.

I have rang the local brake specialist, they said $60 for a new hose to be made, but I have to take the split hose off so they use it as a sample.

My plan is to get 2 made up, and have one as a spare.

The solid brake line comes through the inner guard, joins a rubber hose right along side the top shock mount, then goes down and joins another rubber hose, then goes to the caliper.
The hose thats split is the one that joins the solid line.

The bolts that hold it on, appear to be hidden, well the top one does anyway, the bottom bolt is there for me to get to, but the top one looks tricky.

Does anyone have any tips on how to get it off properly??

And the best technique for bleeding brakes on a Paj??
Ive done the Lux a few times, but the Paj, seems to be more complicated.

Advice and hints needed.

Shes driving the Lux around for now, which would be funny, as shes going from a 3lt V6 with pwr steer/air to the poolux thats an old diesel, and no pwr steer or air.
The sooner I get hers fixed, the sooner I can have the Lux back.

Thanks.

Might be worth replacing all the front lines. Shop around on prices though, you should be able to do better than 60 bucks for one hose

for example

55 bucks for two

Best way to bleed is gravity. Crack the nipple/nipples and let it drip for 15-20 minutes. In that time keep the master topped up. It's the best way to sit for half an hour drinking, while looking like you're doing something important. Of course this is a one man job, but most will know brake bleeding as a two man job so it won't hurt if you invite a mate round to help bleed your stomache of air.

Thats awesome dude. I like your thinking. :D

Heres the pics.

This is the hose thats split, just above the paddle pop stick is where the rubber hose joins the solid line.

This is where its split, the paddle pop stick is pretty much right on the split.

HArd to tell from the pics. But often the situation is that you undo the hard line at the chassis from the hose and then free the hose from the bracket. Often it's just clipped in. that leaves a free end to undo the opposite end. Since rotating the hose is essential to undo it from the second line/caliper.

It's usually fairly evident once you have a crack at it. If you can't undo a hose because it's going to twist the hose then you are at the wrong end of the hose.

another tip is use a good pipe spanner. it's a 6 pointed spanner with a small opening to fit over the pipe. normal open ended spanners and some shifting spanners are a good way to round off the nut. Another option is vice grips. the new hose will go on much easier

Just wanted to let you know.
Some extremely nice person here(you know who you are  ), sent me a PM with a part number and some info on the brake line.

So I rang around the local autoparts stores looking for the part, nobody has it in stock, so I found the hose I need for anywhere between $27-$37, but because they needed to order it in, I needed to add $15-$20 extra for delivery, so I was looking at around the $50 area for 1 brake hose, and it wouldnt be in till mid next week.

My other option was to get 1 hose made as $60.

So the nice person told me to try my local Mitsubishi dealer, I hadnt even thought about going genuine, as doing so means even more expense.
I rang Booths spares section here in Wyong(Tuggerah actually), and for $59, I can have not just 1 hose, but the hose that goes to the caliper as well, and they ordered it in overnight, its here now.

Just wanted to let you know. Just in case someone else ends up in the same situation.

Now the fun begins.
