2.8 hilux xtracab blows smoke

Post by LiFtEd-4-RuNa »

hey guys im looking into gettin a hilux extracab, its a 1990 with 280,000kms on the clock

now the issue is he saids its blowing excessive black smoke through acceleration which then clears.
i just want to no if this is fixable without replacing the motor? what could be the cause of this problem.

is there anychance its got worn rings or a dodge motor?

he has changed filters, and run cleaner through it ect.

my plans were to lift it, 33's, and to get a manifold and turbo ect.. off another wreck. so another question is how well do they go offroad?
1990 4 runner (2door) 4" lift with 31" maxxis big horns. 4 cylinders of fail

If its solid front axle, then they go great ofroad, the diesel engines arent a powerhouse, so dont expect too much on the road.
But offroad, the diesels have great torque and crawl really nicely.

The amount of torque is part of the reason Im selling the V8swap gear and sticking with the diesel.

Now if only someone would buy it :?

Fitting a turbo will make it nicer to drive onroad as top end power is increased.

As for lots of black smoke, Im not sure, there could be lots of reasons.
Do a search on here and see what you find out.

Black smoke usually means too rich a fuel mixture.

At 280000 there is a good chance the injector pump and injectors need some loving. If it's got a turbo fitted, dissreguard as the fuel will be turned up for that. Make sure the services are kept up to the diesel as it will blow a big end easy as if you got dirty oil. Oil and filter every 5000km for mine and fuel filter every 10000 after I got the pump rebuilt.
Turn up th wick ya sook
