4 inch lift in an 80
hey guys had my 80 for about a month now and im gettn pretty sick of it lookin like a low rider so i think its time for the lift.its a 97 standard which i think is the same as dx without the little sticker,i want to run 35's so just wanting to know if a 4 inch lift is enuff or do i need to go bigger?i also would like to know if anyone has used those ironman lifts,i havnt heard anything bad but they are just so cheap compared to others, which looks a little suss to me.if anyone could be bothered some pics would really help so i can see the finished product of how other trucks sit

Re: 4 inch lift in an 80
Go for the 4 inch lift. 35's will scrub but it's notthing to worry about. And if it does worry you, just extend the rear bump stops. Which is something you may haev to do anyway to prevent damage to the longer shocks.
The worst part about being told you have Alzheimer's, is that it doesn't just happen once.
Re: 4 inch lift in an 80
no worries looks like i will stick with the 4 inch then, thanks heaps for all the info guys
Re: 4 inch lift in an 80

Re: 4 inch lift in an 80
I've got a 3' lift from Superior, easy to fit and I guy I went to Janowen with runs 35's on a 3" lift. He said the rear rub a little but not enough that he was worried about.
Below is a pic of mine with the 3" lift

Re: 4 inch lift in an 80
Superior Engineering has some nice choices of rebuildable shocks. Buy them once and you can fit new seals in when they leak instead of replacing the whole shock.
Ironman stuff is pretty cheap and you get what you pay for.

yea i had ironman leafs and torsion bars in my old hilux, and they were stiff as,but i wasnt sure if there coils were any good
Re: 4 inch lift in an 80
I've had the tough dog big bore shocks in my 80 for the past 7 years, I haven't had any issues apart from knocking the adjusters off, and it's been driven on and offroad for 4 of those years as a daily driver.
I started with the 6" lift which got me about 7-8" initially and has settled to about 4" now, this was using King coils. The rear has since changed due to the chop, I now have dobinson flexi coils soft 4" in the rear and the king in the front, it's good enough for now.

Re: 4 inch lift in an 80
I'mrunning 4inch and 35's too, sits and tucks nice, as per the flares, you just need to trim the inner edge of the rear flares about have the width, From about just past have way on the back halve through to the rear bottom edge. Once you fit it you wil see after a while where the black marks are. Can post up some pics on Monday if you want, but once you flex it out a few times you'l see...ruddelllux22 wrote:yea looks awsome mate, thats pretty much what i am after.mine also has the fibreglass flairs,do they cause any problems in terms of scrub

Re: 4 inch lift in an 80
Mate have a look at suspension stuff flexy kit if you are serious about using it. If you just want it to look good then sell it and get a ricer. I have 4" in with 35's and did scrub on full flex reverse so put a body lift in. At over $300 a corner for tyres I wouldn't risk the scrub on a 3".

Re: 4 inch lift in an 80
Suspension Stuff Flexy coils were made by Dobinsons so a lot of people called them Dobinsons Flexy Coils.
We have changed the way we do flexy coils so we can get more flex. So we are running our Suspension Stuff 6" shocks with the 3 and 4" lifts. (We have options for Dobinsons, Tough Dog or SRC shocks) The new coils are black and I haven't officially changed my web site to reflect the new designs. So for now at least, there is no such thing as a Dobinsons Flexy coil for a Cruiser. They do a too soft version for a Patrol though.
Check out the Patrol section if you want to learn more about our black new high tensile version of them. Here is a link to the 80 Series section https://www.suspensionstuff.com.au/shop ... cts_id=777" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The new coils will be available from a 2" and and every half inch up to a 5" lift. We will be using very similar spring rates as everyone uses and you can get normal duty and extra heavy duty rears.
They have a 2 year warranty, even if you drive in competitions.
I will have all lifts in stock in May/June 2011 but right now there can be up to a months wait.
Something of note with a 4" lift 80 Series. If you get castor correction plates and you have a full time 4WD, you will have driveline vibration problems caused by the front tailshaft. The best way to fix this is with a part time kit.
I would prefer to see people get dropped radius arms because the castor is set more accurately and you are a lot less likely to get the vibes and if you do, you have a better chance of tuning them out with gearbox spacers.
It isn't the lift that gives you the vibes, it is how you have rotated the front axle effecting the angle of the tailshaft.
Getting castor correction bushes will not work. Poly bushes might come reasonably close but mark my words you would get better flex when you are stock if you run the poly bushes.
