3.5 litre into a 3.0?

Post by young-gun »

Just a curious question for when/if my 3.0 ULP 1994 Pajero motor blows up, or has some serious problems.
Can you put a newer 3.5 litre ULP motor into the older 3.0 ULP Pajeros?
As in, can it be done with minimal f'n around and extra $?
cheers

The 3.5 gearbox and running gear is bigger than 3L stuff, couldn't tell you if the bolt pattern is the same on the bell housing between 3.5L and 3L so not sure if diffent engine bolts to 3L gearbox. Also the body is lifted a little higher to clear everything. And engine mounts are in slightly different position. Not to mention the ecu and wiring harness will be different. It is possible but you would nearly want the whole 3.5L pajero to retrieve all of the bits that are needed.

Personally I would replace the 3L motor is it is cactus.

I'd say the easiest and cheapest way of swapping would be to whip your steering wheel off, get a 3.5 pajero, pop the steering wheel back on in there. Hey presto, 3.5! It's a 'whole vehicle swap', it's all the rage these days... :)

A 3.5L motor is2X dearer2nd hand than a 3.0L motor 2nd hand, and if you wanted a fresh o.e you'd better b sitting down when they give you a quote, then there's the ecu, would cost nearly the same to drop a rover 3.5L v8 in I recon.????

Yea but the Rover is a big motor and the Paj is a small motor in comparison, you need custom radiator, fans etc, the radiator support needs all chopped out, a Buick/Holden V6 would be much easier to fit due to their baby size.

A couple have been done over here in the State s. One was an 89 that had the 3.0, he's still putting it together. The other replaced a 2.6. It only took them about a month and the dude was driving it. Swapped the bellhousing, cut out the old motor mounts and welded in the new. Fuel pump, which they didn't tell too much about and the dude was driving. Even got youtube of it.

Yeah it´s really a pretty straight forward swap, I think swapping in 3.5´s is gonna be a new trend here in the states kind of like swapping out carby 2.6´s for turbo EFI 2.6´s or NA 2.4´s.
