40 inch Stickie Treps V GU running Gear.

Looking at putting 40 inch stickie treps on my GU play car. I'm usualy run the 37's in the same with H260 rear both locked and chipped 4.5 petrol. Will it handle the bigger rubber.
Anyone running Nissan GU with 40's ???

Mick from Superior Engineering ran 40" stickies on his comp GQ. With Cal CV's he was blowing them and hubs as well. Maybe the NOS didn't help but you could give him a call and he might help ya out. He was making Cromo Hubs for the nissans to stop them smashing.

would be largely dependant on your driving style..
first weekend out with beadlocks on my 42's i busted 2 auto hubs and a manual hub.
2nd weekend out drove harder lines and broke nothing.
D22 Navara....hydro coilovers, hydro steer, 42's...

Correct me if i'm wrong but your running 37inch treps on both your comp trucks. The jump to 40 inch rubber is a comparatively small increse of 90mm diameter or 45mm radius. With a chipped 4.5 engine and a bit more care, you should be ok.
Giant racing was advertising for cromoly axles for GU's a while back maybe hit hime up for some Cromoly strength. Add some superiour cromly freewheeling hubs and you will have a strong setup.
Anything is possible, it just comes down to time and money.

yeah, its for my play car on weekends. only dreaming for now. but its like going from 35's (never break anything) ,to 37's its quite alot more stress on drive line.

Brett Thorpe has been running 40"s on gu diffs under his patrol for ages now and as far as im aware no dramas, altho it is a lot lighter than ur average patrol.

i would still bring a spare set of cals to TT. We have being busting a few in testing and not drive particularly hard (GQ td42t, 4.3s 85%)

Just running standard GU cvs. Hopefully ill have a couple spares by tuff truck.

so you haven't busted a stock CV on the 42's yet? wow, only hubs. Bogan has only busted one hub but the cv broke at the same time, weird huh

Pretty sure Brett Thorpe hasnt busted a gu CV either.

eh give me time, his has seen more use then mine. 2 of the hubs were autos which lasted longer then i thought, the 3rd was a manual and it gave out alot easier then i thought. See how i go on sunday. :twisted:

I could break a Cal CV or standard hub even without moving more than a metre on level flat ground( EG- Dirt road), just do a front dig , at least half turn and the front end is going to say no more.
That was using Cal Cv's and standard Hubs= hubs will blow everytime

With Cal Cv's that are stronger than standard GU cv's the hub is the weaker point, if you then put on our "UNBREAKABLE" front hubs then you have a weaker set of CV's, axle , pinion and ring gear.

40inch trep's will easily twist of an axle if it is a H260 or a H233 as well.
The axle just twist like they are a pretsil
It is not the case to say the tyres are "just going from 37-40 inch as they are much wider as well and this combined with the addition load on the driveline, especially if it is a stinkin hot day your tires are super sticky and you get it under an undercut ledge the driveline wont handle it.
At the end of the day it depends on what you drive and how you drive it.

If you are going to run 40's and they are an awesome tire to use over a 37
( there is No Comparison between them ) just drive it sensibly and if you get it that stuck just back it out or recover the vehicle sensibly.

Some guys may use them and never break a part, thats good but i certainly proved they can break parts very easily on a Patrol, i didnt drive stupid just put the truck where most would not and had more power than most Patrols.

yeah, a few times we have had breakages, I have my back to the car running/walking up the track, thinking its not a challenge, then hear a cv/axle let go. going from 37x14.5 crawlers to 40x13.5 stickies has ment a breakage of some sort on every trip. its prefered for a hub to fail as it easier & cheaper to replace, but we have only had one let go on an undercut ledge and snapped a tie rod end, loading up the hydro, trying to winch out.

on another note Auto Hubs stronger / tougher than Manual hubs?????? i run Manuals on winch car with stickie 37's and GU Cals. so far so good but have heard the auto hubs don't crack the housings as easy as manuals and hang in a bit better. Anyone????

I run 40x13.5R17 on 17x10 at around 6-8psi, have a ZL/XF 4.1 Falcon, C4 auto with 68% reduced 60 Series T-case and 4.3 diffs. SO not over the top gearing, under geared if anything, and a 25 year old motor. GQ Cals with an MQ Centre and Superior's Hubs and I did this too a Cal -

Now that we have the Hubs that have an unconditional lifetime warranty against breaking we just need someone who knows axles to built a really strong axle/cv set and all the patrol owners are gunna be real happy. :armsup:

Nope. There is no warranty will Cals no matter when they were purchased.

must have. we havent had any replaced under warranty. stickies have to much grip for em lol

must be a qld thing, i haven't ever heard of one getting replaced under warranty up here. Maybe its because we drive harder! :finger:

Team Bundy has broken 2 also and never recieved warranty on them...And Paul only runs 37's too...... over priced i say... hence i never went to Nissan diff and stayed with toyota cause Booby will warrant them no questions asked...
