what would you do
hey fellas,
well my 75 decided to pack it in about 2 months ago, rings are gone, so the cruiser is off the road, i have a new daily driver not a fourby, and the cruiser is sitting on the back burner, but i am slowly ammasing money to throw at it. it may take 2 years or so but im going to do what i want with it.
what would you do with a blank canvas???? im going to get rid of the motor(2h) and tray, and am going to do what ever takes my fancy, and i say it like that as, i dont intend to register it again.
plans so far is a motor (need one of them) have tossed a few ideas around ( 12ht, ihz turbo, 454, 304, 383, 6.5 d v8, turbo or super charging any and all motors)
tray, some kind of semi practical tray i can use at comps to also hold gear while i work on it.
any thoughts??
AL

Re: what would you do
Hi it all depends how far your wanting to go, engine wise I would go for the 1HZ with after market turbo, and air to water inter cooler, this will allow you to get rid of the old cluncky gearbox and run the 80 series box and transfer. (much easyer and smoother to drive.) I have a hot 351 clevland in my tuck, the poke is great on the faster tracks. But i find the 1HZ deisels are better on the hills and wetter tracks. The tray can have endless options???????
Re: what would you do
1hz turbo are a good motor dont mistake me. but why dont u look into something off the books.. cummins diesel? or even mwm sprint motor. i have 1 in my f250. intercooled turbo diesel standard make 130kw. there the same displacement 4.2 litres. if i had my way again id lean toward a truck style of engine.

Re: what would you do
Why not just go a ls1, they are relatively cheap, plenty of go fast bits and it's fairly commonly seen in fourbies. Another thing to consider is that the dollar is good at the moment so why not import a crate motor and a few good bits with it.

Re: what would you do
i have thought of the 4bt, but can also get my hands on a good running chev 6.5 for 4 grand.
ive thought about the ls1 or 2 but what i dont like is all the efi, as the event i plan on building it for efi will let me down, id say out of the 30 or so petty fourbys that ran in it, 20 - 25 of them had issues coming out of the water holes,
the pettys running carby didnt have the same issues, the patrol turbo 4.2s did the best at the event i attended, but the over al winner was actually a super charged rover v8

Re: what would you do
If the stuff you want to do involves alot of water crossings then I would go diesel for sure. If you can get your hands on a 12 ht or 1hdft, that's what I'd be going for.

not for a road car though, no rego. so im thinking any thing goes

Re: what would you do
Wouldn't bother with a diesel - too expensive to get power out of (or even rebuild/repair to standard level) and totally inappropriate for short course racing (no revs, you'd spend half the time changing gears). You've given us no idea as to what event/s you're planning on doing with it so i'm going to assume it's an ameture mud racing type event. As you couldn't afford to fix it I'll have to assume you're working with a modest budget. In which case probably go with a big old dirty v8 on gas and a box of condoms to waterproof it. Muck around with the leaves, maybe make a track-bar on the rear, loose as much weight as possible and mount the radiator behind the cab. Good to go.

Re: what would you do
event is similar to mud racing, but includes larger jumps, so needs to be capable of landing hard. the event i will be building it for is the love day river land challenge and mud dust and music(which unfortunately starts tomorrow so next year it is)
it wasn't that i couldn't afford to fix it, the new (used) car i have cost more than what it would have cost to put a 2nd hand 2 h back in. the fact was i didnt want a 2 h in it. but at the time i didnt have the money to go sourcing a 12ht, or putting in anything else hat was going to eat up thousands.
and now as im saving for a wedding, its on the back burner so im just doing small things, like parting out the bits i dont want first.
my first thought and one im really keen on is a 454. but what i do want to do, is make sure no matter what when the time comes that i want it back on the road, that it can go back on the road, thats the reason i have been leaning towards a diesel. as id have to run the 454 on straight gas to pass engineering.

Before you part stuff out, make sure you know exactly what your plans are or you end up trying to buy parts you sold. Well I did, it sucks.

Re: what would you do
i definitely dont want the busted 2h or the tray but some one else may have uses for them, either a rebuild and turbo if thats what they want or a tray for their chop

Re: what would you do
If it involves mud or water, get your hands on a quality turbo diesel, that's what I'd be going for.
Tray, just build a tube tray that is still semi functional.
Coils/coil over the farker, if you plan on jumping it.
Take lots of pics.....

Re: what would you do
LS1 and waterproof it properly. Well setup efi will cause you far less problems then a shitty old carby. Diesel will be big $$$$$ for nowhere the same performance.
