i am new to 4x4outerlimits and i have a problem which i hope you can help me solve.
I have a 1983 Nissan MQ Patrol 2.8 litre petrol (L28) with a four speed box.
The gearbox is noisy at the higher rev end in 2nd and 3rd Gears. No noise in top or neutral.
just a little in first
It is like a gearshift vibration and is enhanced when tightly grabbing the
gearshift knob. (I have a noisy knob? - now that's a worry!!)
Seriously, I have removed the gearbox twice and ended up replacing all
bearing in the box plus the Input shaft. The gears all seem in top condition.
Still it remains the same.
I would be extremely pleased if anyone could help by advising me.

Well I'd guess that when you put pressure on your knob it pushes the selectors against the groove in the gears (trying to shift them) making a noise (because they won't move - as they are under acceleration or deccelleration load), they would be in different positions depending on what gear youre in hence noise in different gears.
Ive only really stripped and rebuilt a cbr900 gearbox which is quite different (no synchros and dogs) but the shift forks which moved the gears had specific clearances between the respective gears, was the mq box like that?
And did you check the clearances against factory specs for the shift mechanism?
Also my mq and mk both had stuffed gearshift boots which made everything a lot noisier than it should have been.....
