how to adjust steering box?

Post by 351ciofgrunt »

Hey guys,

I've got play in my steering and I've narrowed it down to the steering box (you can wriggle the steering wheel a couple of inches either way and the steering shaft turns into the steering box without the pitman arm moving)

Is adjusting the play out of the steering box something that can be done at home or do I need to take it to a mechanic?

Anyone got the know how?

there is a thread sticking out the top of the steering box on the opposite end to the pitman arm, you adjust it there (1/4 turn at a time). Do it with the car running.

thats right. just check as sometimes it will not get full lock in 1 direction if you go to far down with the screw. this fix is quik, easy and very effective. a mate showed me with the old bus and 1 would get a quater of a turn nearly out of the wheel before it took up the slack in the box. did this and it was perfect.
only the first roll hurts, then its a ride..
