i have a mate interested in buying a 2005 jeep wrangler but the speedo is inop anybody had this problem before?

They are cable driven via a plastic gear in the rear of the transfer case, either the gear or the cable has crapped out would be my guess.Does the odometer still rotate?
My friends aren't holding me back..... I'm pulling 'em forward.
