Show us your Portal Diffs!

Post by zas »

hello guys,

Just thought i would start a tread for those people out there lucky enough to have a set of portal diffs.

Some action pics would be great but i am also looking reviews and opinions on portal diffs. Positives and negatives! Strength and reliability, and also cost v's gain.

Mine is trhe one listed under General on Patrol 4x4.com above. They are truly awesome and I wouldn't swap 'em for quids. Takes some time to get used to the different lines you can take with the extra clearance. And all legal!

I am still amazed how they got these engineered?? The 'signing' engineer didn't even stipulate an uprated lower control arm to accommodate the extra torque wrap by having drop axles. Nissan rear links are woeful at the best of times, everyone knows that, then you go and add additional toque wrap....... mmmm something fishy I think. Seen first hand what a mog diff conversion can do to lower links and bushs...... lets say its not pretty.

x2. I was wondering how they would go with twisting. Never really thought about the links or bushes, but I always pictured an axle tube twisting and splitting -imagine that happening on the highway.

Both axle assemblies are laminated during the conversion.

Mine are the 2nd ones Sim79 linked. Have not broken anything yet but mine are not Marks and don't use Patrol links. I am running Portal_teks and my links are 7075 aluminum with massive 1.25" rod ends made by QA1.

The Portal-Tek is basically a Spider 9 flipped upside down. Portal-Tek manufactured the actual portal drop box. I am running 4340 chromoly axles but can upgrade that to a 300M if I needed to. I am running RCV CV axles in front. I have 23" of clearance under my pinions and 18" under my 3rds. I love them! And if and when my Patrol ever dies, these axles will go under the next project. :)
