Spring questions

Post by oil drippa »

Hi to all ,
Talking to various suspension shops about raised springs for my GU , and got kind of lost and this may sound dumb but I really have no idea what they mean when they say ....
A Patrol won't drive well or handle well without "progressive rated springs in the rear " .
Then under advise from a club member I rang Opp Lock about the TUFF DOG springs and was informed they are Linier springs front and rear , and they say that the GU's don't even rate off road unless you go for linier rears .
So what do you guys being the experts recommend ? What is the advantage of Linier against progressive or disadvantages ?
thanx in advance

the advantage of progressive springs is they can be soft comfy and flexy at the top of the travel and progressively (as the name suggests) get stiffer, less flexy and less comfortable ride results

Linear coils have the same "stiffness"-technical term  therefore flex the same and have the same level of comfort throughout the whole spring travel.

Offroad wheel travel is important to me so i wouldn't go past linear coils but as most daily driver/weekend warrior vehicles it is a compromise.

I would imagine that progressive coils would be good for jumping or high speed situations when hydraulic bumpstops can't be afforded.

So in summary i personally would stick to linear coils, and do a lot of research before you buy. and remember stiffer is not always better-get swaybar disconnects and get long but soft coils so that you have lots of travel and it is smooth on the road. If you need to carry a load put airbags in the rear springs.

Thanx heaps for the reply ! I will have a look around at poundages then on the linier .I like the Tuff Dogg but the wire is huge and they say they are "stiff" so will have a look into Kings and Lovells , I think thats about all we have over here .
Could I ask what sort of "longer springs for more travel" you would recommnend ??
thanx again ;)

I find the progressive springs are more likely to sag sooner.

Thanx heaps guys , will contact Dobinsons and see if they have a dealer over here or freight costs .
I had Kings in my previous 3 4bys and was never 100% happy with them .
I contacted Nick at Mannells and got heaps of info from him , Nick has some fantastic suspension packs and when money permits I will be getting the 5 inch set up ....yummy !
Also with a 3 inch spring lift can I run 35 inch Simex Centapedes or will I need the BigBalls spacers to move the front diff foreward ????

once again thanx heaps ;)

Then why buy the ones your asking about???
Save your money for this set. Unless you can afford to do it twice? Doesnt make sense though.
