widening diffs with stock parts, does it work?

Sometime soon i plan on hopefully starting my fj45 buggy build and i was hoping to be able to achive a wide stance at a low cost, asides from wheel spacer and offset rims. i came up with the idea of cutting the short side tube of a set of 60 series diffs and buying another set of 60 series axles and cutting the long side tube off it and adapt it to where the old short side used to be, to give me an super wide stance, if that makes sense and also be able to find orignal sized axles/ c'vs and not have to have a custom set made up. is this a good idea, would it work, has anyone done this or got an thoughts or advice on it.

it would work. I have used two 80 rear short sides to make a custom narrowed diff. I personly wouldn't want anything any wider than a stock diff but it all depends what your building it for a supose.

i'm building it just for a bit of fun to muck around in, in the hills around home most of it's alot of off camber rocky terrian so the main purpose for it is stability. Any reason why you wouldn't use a wider then stock diff? i also plan on building the truck to meet Tuff Trucks rules and regulation because i'd like to have a crack at that one day.

Have a look at kon's build thread in members section. He lengthened diffs for a 40.

Yep, widening the axle tubes like we did on kon's car is simple strong and relativly cheap.

How wide do you want it? With 60s axles widened on just the short side under a 40 its pretty phat.

i was looking at going fairly wide but i think it might be overkill but then again people are running 3'' wheelspacers and flipped rims which would be close to running a standard landcruiser offset rim and the widen long side it would end up cheaper for me and also be less strain on the driveline( hubs and wheel bearings).

whats your idea with the 60+80 gear 60 centre and 80 axles or the other way around? would it be much stronger then standard?

60 diff, 80 axles and cvs. Billys forged 6 stud hubs.

Thinking about 40 series short side and an extra long long side to get the pumpkin way offset for clearance.

Obviously this would be in a totally custom housing.

For you if your wanting to just use off the shelf parts. Go the 60 with lenthened short side. Still need a custom axle but only one that way
