Navara cuts out when turning key?help!!

Post by georgey »

Hey fellas
went to go and get my navara from mums house and bring it over to the new property today but everytime i turned the key the reds would come up but when i went to crack it everything just went off,had to disconnect battery to get reds up again but just kept sort of shorting out.
The battery was fully charged,i pulled it out of another car after starting and moving it.

It drove fine when i moved it about 2 months ago.

Anyone got any ideas?
Cheers

Isn't it meant to cut out when you turn the key off? :finger:

Flat battery or bad earth or a combination of both. Check for corrosion on the battery terminals and where the earth is connected to the engine. If all good then check the battery. Most likely your battery is flat. But if that is OK then run a jumper lead from your battery - to the engine and give that a go. If that doesn't work then jump start it and if that still doesn't get it going then check your fusable links in the engine bay for corrosion and make sure they are seated properly in their holders.

Oh and when if you jump start it make sure you run the negative lead directly to the engine instead of the battery on your car.

Had a similar issue on a Patrol with a TD42. Soon as turning the key to ignition everything dropped out no power to anything.
Turned out when I put a new earth wire on I got some grease, dirt and power steering fluid between all the mounts.
Took all the earths off and rubbed them with some emery paper. Was perfect once put back together. Guessing the NAV would be the same as a Patrol. With the earth going from Neg battery terminal, to body, then to engine.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....

Yep. When you're turing to crank the starter/solenoid drains all the smoothing caps in your electronics and then your lights go out. The lights then come back on after the caps charge again. You're not getting enough current from the battery - my first stop would be earth lead, then fusible link.

yeah the earth does go from battery to earth then motor, will try a jumper lead from battery to engine when im over there next.
if that works ill go buy a new thicker earth lead.
Thanks for the help boys

Why? It worked up until now. It's very unlikely that the earth lead is actually damaged. Most likely just some corrosion limiting the amount of current able to pass. Pull off the earth at all points, rub back the lugs and where the lugs bolt down, replace, spray over with some paint to prevent further corrosion (After nipping all the connections up).

WD40 is not going to help a bad earth in any way.
the only thing that will fix it is to be cleaned up ( metal to metal contact ) If anything wd40 would make the connection worse as water etc will carry a current .. oils are not nearly as good.

Nissan patrols and navaras are renowned for having a poor earth to the engine and as soon as it gets a bit of age to it with the associated crap it has trouble. Just running an extra earth to the engine is an easy fix. It will let your engine start much easier as well.
