Turbo vs supercharger on 2.8 hilux

Post by inbits »

G'day

I am picking up my new hilux this week and the first thing I want to do is forced
Induction
It is a 1990 single cab 2.8 diesel

So I was originally wanting to turbo it but then thought that a supercharger would be different and should work better due to having boost from idle once setup right.
However there has to be a reason why very little people if anyone use a supercharger over a turbo so what are people's opinions?

Cheers

ton of info around.

super chargers are hard to setup, habit of chewing through belts, can have problems with the front pulley, tend to make loads of heat so good intercooling is a must, not as efficient as turbo for onroad driving.
you don't necessarily get boost at idle but it there is no needing to load up the engine to get boost like a turbo, so engine response is great and far better than a turbo in low gears.

turbo on the other hand is dirt cheap as surf 2.4 turbo setup is a straight bolt on.

your own setup? what you mean?

if your not getting a intercooler. i recomend buying the cross over pipes from Denco. they are sweet looking and bolted straight upto my safari turbo so shouild bolt to anything

Will be doing my own manifold and piping for intercooler just for something to do and won't cost me as much

i made my turbo setup for 2.8. got a ct20 turbo and manifold then made all stainless intake piping(not intercooled tho) and 3in mandrel exhaust from turbo back through one straight through muffler. only cost bout 1300. all braided oil lines(which is a must) unless u want 60psi oil pressure goin down side of ute lol. i cant giv ya power/torque figures but prior to turbo it stugled to get to 110 on 33s and stay there. once turbod it cruised on 120-125 on 35s
