HJ60 wont crank

Hi all just done an oil & filter change on me 60 went to start and it cranked over and made an awful metallic screech for a second or two then i switched it off.Now when I try to start it just gives a loud heavy clunk like the starter is engaging but the motor is seized, is this a spun bearing? To tell should I take out the glow plugs and try to turn the motor by the pulley nut. I tried to free it up by rolling down the driveway and engaging reverse but it stopped dead and rocked back and forth, pretty damned locked up what am I looking at here. thanks all. andy

How hard is it to pull the starter out, could it be jammed. If its easy to get to try pulling that out and clutching it.

Try turning it backwards using the front crank pully/nut and breaker bar... if it moves at all... you may have released a jammed starter pinion OR you may have moved a piston away from where it has a valve squashed into the head... good luck... there are several other possibilities as to what is wrong as well............

Hi stilvin and red60 I will try this after I try another possibility someone has suggested to me that I may have hydraulic lock it by getting oil into the bores via worn valve guides putting the oil in too rapidly,interesting thing is I used a new funnel this time one that screws neatly into the filler hole and was able to get the oil in super quick will remove glow plugs and hand turn the pulley nut see if oil comes out the plug holes and if it will move at all thanks for your suggestions will let you know how i go either way andy

Hi all is well? it lives and breathes fire again, took out each glow plug inspected and tested each all glow while 3 & 5 had substantial wet oil on, turned it over by hand forwards and backwards and about 2-3 tablespoons of oil come out of 3 & 5 most out of five. then put the governor in stop position and quick flick of the switch no worries turns over freely put plugs back in checked oil all good. Start and she fires up straight away couple of clunking sounds for 3 seconds oil pressure up and big cloud of blue smoke, let her idle for 5-10 min till temp needle start to move then took her for a run all seems good.Thanks again I would not have thought the oil would have gotten in there, I will biff the new filler and go back to me slow one Kind regards andy

So essentially (if I understand what has happened) is that since you have a new funnel, you can pour oil in almost as fast as you want... so what has happened, is that the oil can't escape down the drain holes in the head quickly enough.... so you end up with a reservoir of oil in the tappet cover/rocker gear cavity... since the oil is so deep, it seeps down worn valve guides enough to cause hydraulic lock to occur in some of the cylinders... your motor needs new guides or maybe as a minimum, you could pull the tappet cover and make sure your drain holes are not clogged/restricted... I've not heard of this before but I suppose it's technically possible.... one for the obscure info file I'd say.. :cool: :cool:

It's good to see a result posted, too many people pose a question and never tell us what the answer was. I must say I too was suprised, it must be one tired engine, it cant possibly run very well.
