Both engines don,t last long .

Zd30 has more power

RD2.8t will cost much less to fix .

Id buy the one with a RD2.8t if you must have a diesel .

Either would be ok for an engine conversion to TD42 although the ZD30 has the larger gearbox whereas the 2.8 doesnt
Down side is the electronics more apparent on the ZD30
Either way it a fairly straighforward conversion and is a matter of collecting the parts you need.

I would go the latest year model ZD30 you can afford, ensure the service records are excellent, do the research about 'fixing' some of the problem areas, and put some gauges in it so you know whats going on. At least you would then have better fuel economy and more power than the 2.8 until it destroys itself. Then bank on a TD42 conversion

Cheers, would you have a rough idea on how much the conversion would cost minus the engine price?

Depends on if you do it, or pay someone else.
If you want to pay for it to be done, you can ring someone like Patrolapart as they do these for people and can usually supply all the parts if need be.
I did mine myself and it takes a while to do on your own, but that way you only pay for parts. If you can buy a decent donor vehicle you might be able to do it cheaper and have all the fiddly bits to do the job.

Buy the ZD30, fit an EGT gauge and drive to that.
End of story.
