Bobtail Range Rover Classic 4 Door

Ok... Well I'm new to this forum.
I bought an old 4 Door 84' Range Rover Classic over two years ago, It came with the Standard 3 Speed Auto Box and 3.5L Carby engine.
Came with 2 inch lift in the rear and 60 series springs up the front and some terrible 31" AT's
Had some after market exhaust system which he managed to snap off just behind the rear axle and also Dented the boot floor and fuel tank badly after apparently clonking a rock... :roll:

The car began being called Pumba for no reason at all, and eventually the name stuck, so It's now called Pumba.
Pumba sat around and for 1 year before anything began happening and then the build began

Decided it would be best to Bobtail the rangie and get rid of the terrible automatic transmission and V8 as they can not be driven on P Plates in QLD.

Managed to pick up a 1996 4 door 300tdi manual discovery 1 for a bargain, had a completely rotten A Pillar, and began wrecking the Discovery 1.

Began stripping down the Range Rover down to the rolling chassis, uncovered a terrible Kink in the chassis behind the rear spring mount where the car had clonked the rock :bad-words:

Then it all became clear, I was to put the Range Rover body onto the Discovery Chassis.
This was advantageous for a few reasons
  • The Engine and Gearbox wouldn't need to have new mounts welded up and engineered
    The Chassis had no Kink :cool: or anything like as much rust
    and I had the advantage of being able to use the Anti-roll Bars that the discovery has, Good for road driving but terrible for off-road and articulation...

Pretty far into the build but haven't got any pictures from before this stage. Engine and gearbox have been removed, Gearbox Cross member removed and Fuel tank mountings have been made up. The fuel tank is going above the A-Frame almost directly over the rear axle.

Painted Chassis.
1st Coat - Cold Galv paint
2nd Coat - True bite primer, two coats
Final Coat - Gun Metal Grey Hammer effect paint, two coats
Still on the old suspension set-up and chassis remains un-bobtailed

Chassis being chopped, Removed 420mm off the end which allows the front and rear overhang to be proportional

Cardboard mock fuel tank made, Mainly to check clearance of the A-frame on full articulation, Removed Springs and shocks and dropped chassis down onto the axle until the bump stops hit.

Suspension set-up I am running:
3 Inch lifts coils - Dobinsons
5 Inch Long travel shocks with pin to pin mountings front and rear - Terrafirma
Wide Angle adjustable Ball Joint for A-Frame
Cranked Rear Trailing arms
Castor Corrected 3 Degree Radius arms
Superpro Polyurethane Bushes
Dislocation Cones, front and rear
Extended Polyurethane Bumpstops
Heavy Duty Spring retainers, front and rear
and a 2 Inch Body Lift

I did purchase a Wide Angle 32 Degree Rear Propshaft and a double-Cardon Propshaft for the front, However. The supplier managed to :bad-words: (ruin) the order and instead sent me a Wide Angle 32 Degree Rear propshaft for a defender 90., So yeah, that went straight onto fleabay and no one seemed interested

Hi, Nice work on this to date. Just one thing and please correct me if I am wrong as I am not familiar with the upper retaining system you are using. But at first glance It looks like you have installed it incorrectly.

Generally you have the turret ring resting on the springs, then its threads are fed up through the spring perch... In the above image I can see no turrent ring so I assume the new retainers are meant to act as the turret ring.
I'd suggest double checking the current configuration. It doesn't look correct to me.
