td42 problem
td42 problem
hello I have a 98 gq desiel flat tray and somtimes when I go for a drive it will blow blue smoke wilst I am driving and then clear up after I rev the tits off it for about 15 secs and then all's well for another 5000-20,000 ks and it dosen't seem to matter if it's hot or cold but its worse if its been sitting for a few day's and not been driven the motor has only done 145,000 ks and is serviced every 5000ks. has anybody had the same problem or does anybody have an Idea on what the problem may be. your knowledge would be most helpful. thanks
Engine could have minor bore glazing-- Some frequent oil changes plus some hard driving will sort this out.is it using any oil between changes?. You should be using a good quality diesel multigrade oil--ie 15W40 Castrol Turbomax,RX Super or Shell RimulaX Dont use a mono grade oil. Check engine is running at correct operating temp--if its too cold, you may get oil thickening---- also make sure PCV valve located at the rear of the rocker cover is functioning ok.For optimum engine life, oil and both filters every 5,0000km's--particularly so for the TD42 which is an old style dirty diesel..Also injectors MAY need servicing..

thanks for that nick I did notice it was running cold so I replaced the thermostat yesterday and yes it has started using a little oil but it seems to only use it when it blows that 15 secs of blue smoke, normal driving wether it's flat going or up hill it blows a little bit of black and down hill it dosen't blow any smoke, The oil I use is rx super and I try and drive it hard every chance I get'' sam
It sounds like you had the same problem as i did--bore glazing. I'm mid-way through a re-build of my TD42 after 550,000km's and after completly pulling it down, it would have quite easily gone another 100,000km's so you should have plenty of life left.Regular oil changes are the key--if your getting 1000km's to a tank then you need to change after 5 tankfulls.
Do a few frequent oil changes and some hard runs and this may fix the problem. The PCV Valve is located underneath the aircleaner on top of the rockercover. It can be cleaned out in carbi cleaner.
