24V Alternator
With the Winch Lux Mick has 4 Optima blue batteries with 2 of them setup for Gigglepin winch to run as 24V.
It will be running a 2nd alternator (24V) where the old A/C was.
Now I have 3 options in alternators - Bosch 45amp or 55amp running similar price $250. Or 80amp which is $400ish.
Do we really need to go the 80amp as it will be slightly bigger but do the $$$ justify it & it will make an already tight squeeze worse !!!

Re: 24V Alternator
Are they a compact unit ?
That seems to be the biggest issue as most 24V alts are truck based & huge !!! The couple I found in spec book were the only units that were standardish size to 12V alts.

Re: 24V Alternator
The Bosch one's are the most popular and easy to get.
I never had any problems with mine and the winch was never short of power, I was also using Optima's
Cheers

Re: 24V Alternator
I have a 70A unit that im selling.
I wouldnt mount it down low in the engine bay either, unless you love changing bearings. Keep it up high and dry if you can.

Off the top of my head it was a 55.
Also as MickyD said try and keep up high.
Also make sure your brushes are at the top pointing down, that way you keep a lot of crap out of the brush pack.
Cheers

Re: 24V Alternator
I run a Bosch bxu 2456 , it's a 55amp, winch runs off 2x 1100cca optimas. Never run out of grunt yet on a twin 6horse top hat.

Re: 24V Alternator
How about a 170amp 24v one?

They make 370amp 12v ones as a direct fit to toyota's etc too. Not cheap but VERY good.

Best thing with these is the low RPM, high amp ratings. 220amp at idle would suit a winch application nicely.

Re: 24V Alternator
Mick wants 24V & that 190amp alt would be too big (physical size).
But thanks anyway
