hey guys,

started leaking oil out the steering knuckle after a bout to landcruiser mountain park. reckon the oil seal is stuffed in the front end.

can anyone tell me if it is worth doing the whole rebuild thing if the bearings and everything else is ok, and just replace the oil seal.

also how hard is the teardown of the front end. do i need to get any special tools or machining done. I am not a mechanic, but fairly good with a set of tools normally (it just seems rather daunting).

also if the axle has a groove in it where the oil is getting past, should i get a speedysleeve or have the axle built back up?

if its only just started leaking it will more than likely just be the oil seal is stuffed, could have got dirt in your hub or something, did you go through the mud pits?

you can get the seals as a kit of thier own from toyota fairly cheaply ($30-$40 a side?)

you will need a 54mm tube spanner.

when you have it all out make sure you clean it all down, bearings cv's etc, repack with new grease and you should be good for a shit load more.

i just did the rear of my 60 series and the bearings were in perfect condition after 380,000k's.

There is nothing real complicated in what your doing, aslong as you just do the hub seals and the axle seal, if you wanna go further and pull the steering knuckle down it gets more technical but still fairly easy.

thanks for that. if i have to get the axles out to have them sleeved, does that make the job much bigger?

you can buy the actual oil seal seperatly at repco autopro and the like for around $5.00 each

think they are around $2 - $3 from Don Kyatt's...

there are 2 seal surfaces you might need to speedisleeve - the outer one on the stub axle that the wheel bearing oil seal runs on is more likely to need replacing. the inner seal is fairly tolerant of slight grooving and misalignment, it only goes bad when the wheel bearing has gone outof adjustment and allowed too much slop through the CV, or when the knuckle bearings are worn out.
