Trouble Running With Snorkel Connected
Well here's my story!
Bought an 88 SR5 Extra Cab Hilux 4x4 ute 5 weeks ago.
Its got a brand new 4y motor fitted, done 2500ks with reciepts, Alloy TJM winch bar, safari snorkel, new extractors, Alloy ARB Roll bar, side steps, rear step, towbar, brand new tonneau cover, roll bar lights, driving lights, tray lights, new carpet, cd player, 6x9's in the extra cab and spilts in the front, full surf interior, top notch uniden uhf and scanner, new radiator, new clutch and new rear wheel bearings. Thoroughly Checked the car over, and had 2 mechanics put it up on the hoist and thoroughly check it out as well. Results came back good.
Payed my 10k for it, which considering the extras, and the brand new motor i didnt think it was too bad. I knew of the bloke who was selling it, and that it was a genuine regretful sale, but he was desperate for some cash to secure a business opportunity.
Had it for a week and did the hub seals, put fresh oil in diffs, gearbox/transfer case, and engine. Put a set of coopers st's on it, and new discs and pads on the front, thought i was in for some trouble free motoring. week 2, went bush, broke my lsd. $980 for a new center. 2 days later, alternator, rebuild $125. 1 week later the engine developed a huge rattle in the front which after 2 days at the mechanic turned out to be a stretched timing chain. new chain and tensioner fitted. 4 days later, starter motor dies. $200 for a new 1. 2 days later, fuel and water pump go at the same time! another $200. Also i am only getting 380ks out of a 100L of petrol on the highway. Back to the mechanic, carby has issues. New 1 on the way. 2 weeks later , engine uses 5L of oil in 900ks, and not a drop remaining in the sump! Pulled the plug out, and noting came out!
What about toyota reliability?? I hear about it, but am yet to find it! Anyway, new engine number 2 is on the way down from brisbane today so see what happens this time! The whole friggen car is new now! Only have a gearbox to go. Starting to get beyond a joke.
My next unsolved drama is i cant run the prick of a thing with the snorkel connected or it starts to cough, and stalls everytime u stop at an intersection or want it to idle. Also smells really bad under the bonnet. So i had to get some flexible tube from the air cleaner down along the firewall to the extractors so it sucks some warmer air off them. Even with the snorkel head turned around it still wont run with it connected. Anyone else have any ideas? Cause i am gettin sick of swapping pipes.
Anyway at this rate i could have gone and bought a new 1!
Thats my nightmare, and what a run to have for my first toyota! Lucky i got the old "make my dinner" t-shirt to go with it, cause its been at the workshop for the last week and a half so i am stuck on the couch ordering the missus around!!! Any help or suggestions would be helpful! Thanks

i reckon there is something stuck in the snorkel like a lemon or something. Obviously your mate was a bit bodgy with the motor rebuild..bet the cam is tight in the head from it overheating prior to you getting it.
Anyway, new motor is coming, with your new ancilaries, it should go ok.
Look on the bright side....u could have a good motor and no mrs to boss around....lol

Were abouts are you from sounds like you have a carby freeze problem.schmidty wrote:Engine is new. No rebuild, new out of the crate. so hows that! 4500ks from a brand new engine! should only just be run in not rooted! But any ideas about the snorkel problem? No blockages, just doesnt seem to agree with the cold air and extractors.
And YTF did you spend money on a Y series motor there crap

yeah well i know about the piss poor effort the y motors put in now, had a brand new motor in it when i got it. Gettin replaced under warranty otherwise i would have looked at something else. know 1 thing for sure though, 1st and last hilux i'll be having. More i look at it the more i should have just bought a cruiser ute.
Anyway, how do i stop the carby from freezing? And how come so many other people i know with petty hiluxes can run theirs with the snorkel hooked up and i can't? Gotta be something going on.
Anyone with any ideas would be helpful cause i am jack of changin the pipe over. Not that i can drive it yet anyway! Second week in the workshop waiting for this motor to show up.

What The?? Toyota still sells these??? unlikely!
your snorkel running problems are probably related to your carburettor problems. the Y series motors aren't the greatest motors ever built but treated right they can live almost forever. there are lux's and hiaces with 300,000+km on them, there is some nasty stuff going on with your "new" motor.
Free air locker to the first 20 callers!
When they fit extractors theres a plate or something they move or add that brings on the problem what I do when in 6deg or cooler is tie a plastic bag over the snorkel and I got another air filter cover and welded a peice of pipe from it over the exctartors

First of all good on ya for stickin to it, remember, money has no value until it's spent.
Don't judge the old 4Y to hard, my old '86Lux did 320,000Kms no probs, I sold the thing to a mate and he's clocked up another 50K of rookie abuse and only now is it starting to puff a bit of smoke. In that time the only thing I replaced was the voltage regulator.
He like you is looking to a "new" 4Y from an importer. HAving read your story I'm begining to wonder if these motors arn't all they seem to be. Where exactly are they being sourced from?
The other option we're playing with is sourcing a second hand 4YE locally and doing the rebuild ourselves.
Oops forgot, you can ditch the stock "MrFreeze" carby for the IDa webber off the XD falcons. Get it re-jetted, add a free flow Uni filter and extractors and they run a treat.

Well thanks for all of the advice from everyone, to answer some questions, no the car isn't on gas, slow enough now! ha. Know a bloke with a 94 twin cab thats got a 22R in it thats on gas and i leave him for dead in mine which is pretty sad!
During the week i got in touch with a bloke who reckons the standard exhaust manifold sits a lot higher and closer to the carby, which warms it a bit. With the extractors now, the carby gets little to no warmth off them so it freezes up in cold conditions. Everyone i know with a 4y that has a snorkel is still running the stock manifold, so i am pretty sure now that the heat under the carby theory is right.
As for the Motor, it is sold as a NEW motor. I have seen mine pulled down today, and everything is new. Not reco'd. I dont know where they are importing them from but they are. Mine came from brisbane motor imports. They are flogging them for about $1700.
Found another importer in brisbane who sells brand new carby's for $330, which is the same as i got quoted to rebuild mine, so might as well get the newie. Suppose 1 good thing about the old 4y is that parts are cheap and easy to find. Hopefully i might get a good run out of it now. But yeah, buying a second hand car, especially a 4wd, gotta be prepared to spend some $$$ on it. Buyin a newie next time!

short of breath
take the top of your snorkle off and remove the metal reducer had the same problem till i came to my senses and droped a 2.8 turbo diesel in and havnt looked back since
Re: short of breath
Agreed, also if it has a foam sock at the top remove it to. Another thing to check with the snorkel is if the pipes have had the internal spring put in them, because if they don`t it might be sucking the sides of the pipes in and blocking the air.HUNTERLUX wrote:take the top of your snorkle off and remove the metal reducer
