hilux high pinion diffs
hi does anyone know if a 80 series high pinion third member fits a hilux housing.want to convert high pinion front n rear for more tail shaft clearance. can get them from states with the oil slingers ,but was wanting a cheaper option.
thanks owen
thanks owen
Re: hilux high pinion diffs
yes they fit i have been running them for quite a few years, be aware but, depending on your model of hilux the rear tailshaft can come into contact with the horsecollar crossmember if you have soft suspension/wish to carry any weight. may need to grind a little out around axle housing flange where the ring gear slides/sits in axle housing (particularly front housing) otherwise can sometimes be a pretty tight fit to get centre in/out.
Re: hilux high pinion diffs
thanks cplux yeah its a 89 dual cab with dual case's set up my own flexy suspension set up with snake track bar so sounds like it might hit the crossmember as it sits low .
might just start with one in the front and go from there .

Re: hilux high pinion diffs
It will be too weak in the rear.

Re: hilux high pinion diffs
whats the difference in ring gear size? they're both 8" arent they?
Why will the 80s be too weak in the rear?

Re: hilux high pinion diffs
Because the coast side of the gears will be copping the grunt as they'll be run backwards. Run a V6 third in the rear, get a CV tailshaft and angle the pinion at the transfer case.Baja Burley wrote:whats the difference in ring gear size? they're both 8" arent they?

Re: hilux high pinion diffs
so the front will be all ok .with a cv tail shaft do u run the cv at the diff end or transfer end?whats a good cv to use strength wise and how do u balance them as this is still street driven.
Re: hilux high pinion diffs
Hilux/landcruiser double cardon at transfer end. Might have to be custom shaft. Aim the diff flange to abit lower then the transfer, allows for torque wrap if leaf
but 80's/105's HP do fit lux housings. I have a 105 HP in my front.

Re: hilux high pinion diffs
each to there own on the strength of the gears, I can tell you but that i have destroyed a lockright and, detroit locker using 80 series HP in the rear, but the gearsets live on. The ring and pinion have been cryo'd but & I dont honestly know wether this makes a difference.
I have dual cases, and a supercharged 4y motor putting out around 115-120kw.

Re: hilux high pinion diffs
do they just bolt in after what ever clearance need to be done or do they need to be redrilled and doweled
Re: hilux high pinion diffs
I dont recall having to change anything to fit the centres except for different size carrier bearings as my lockers were from '88 model hilux diffs. I dont even remember having any problems with initially fitting the diffs re-clearancing, but the last time i had to change one out (in the front) it was a PITA to get out and get new one in so i clearanced the area where it was contacting/jambing.
Re: hilux high pinion diffs
My 80 HP centre just dropped into my lux housing. Only thing I have to change is the gearing.

x2 with the 105.SierraDan wrote:My 80 HP centre just dropped into my lux housing. Only thing I have to change is the gearing.
Most HP are 4.11 70/80/105 series
some 105's are also 4.3
