300 Tdi 3" exhaust

Post by ausrrc »

Hi

Have been modifying my range rover classic, has been bobtailed, now has a 300TDI conversion and in turn It needs a new exhaust system, or atleast, It's what I want.

Have been looking over the idea of a straight through 3 Inch exhaust, no mufflers.

Just wondering over the legality of this in QLD,

And if anyone has done this, any benefits, or negatives.
If possible, what's the sort of price range I'll be looking at and any suggested shops to go too.

Cheers.

I'd be talking with Beaudesert Exhausts.
If the car needs to be rego'd/inspected post build, I think you'll find it wont be 'legal' without a muffler, and dep on the year, maybe even a cat/particulate filter.
Get a system made with a muffler etc in a removable mid section, then get them to make up a straight through piece to replace this mid section when you want.
My friends aren't holding me back..... I'm pulling 'em forward.

Thank you for your in-depth response

It is a December 1996 300TDI discovery engine, not sure if it had a Cat or a Filter? do you know? Thanks in advance.

I'll be having a talk with Beaudesert exhausts soon, Hopefully it wont break the bank.

A 3" pipe on a Tdi needs a muffler, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

I built my own 3" system about 7 or 8 years ago, and didn't bother with a muffler as everyone said "it's a turbo, turbo's don't need mufflers..."

Bollocks.

I kid you not, SWMBO could hear me down-changing 6km from home, it was that bloody loud.

Even worse was the resonance.
Right @ 100km/h the cabin in the Deefer became the resonator.
Instant headache material.
It was bloody awful.
It doesn't help that 4cyl diesels sound like shit anyway..........

A decent resonator at the back tamed a lot of noise and harmonics, a small muffler I made and installed in the mid section did eff all, and it still drones at cruising speeds, although not quite as bad with the muffler.

I'm finally installing a proper muffler in the mid section, (ordered it today) as the noise has done me in.

Ahh, Thanks for that.

Yeah I've read up about that droning noise on a few places,
I'll see about putting a decent resonator, as It's planning to be a daily drive car.

Thanks very much, always good to hear first hand experiences.

I agree...put the 3" system on but include a good quality high flow muffler. The TDi motors sound crap and NOTHING like the sound you're after. Keep it quiet and you'll be much happier.

I run a 2 1/2" madnrel bent system with NO mufflers on my 1998 300TDi Defender 130....and it not overly noisy or do I get any sound resinating through the cabin. I has a really sweet note out the back.

3" is too big in my opinion for a 300TDi unless you use mufflers to help with pressure.

Cheers
