No like cold starts !!!

Post by revnkev »

Since the temp has dropped in the last month or so the 2.8 has been
a cow to start cold :? After the glow plug light goes out I have to crank
it over for about 20 to 30 seconds then when it finally starts there is a
huge cloud of smoke (all the unburnt diesel I've just pumped in ,I guess)
When the engine is hot or warm it starts straight away !
Is this most likely dud glow plugs or injector prob's???
Thanks for your thoughts.

Does it start on 4 cylinders?
If it misses on start up then clears that can point to glow plugs.
Disconnect the plugs and put a multimeter accross each one. They should all read the same,an open circuit is a failure.

i had a similar problem a few years ago. I traced it down to a dodgy wire/connection to the first glow plug(rail). Dry joints in 12volt systems can cause havoc as we all know. I found that the glow plugs would only get 12volts until the dry/dodgy joint heated up and severly reduced voltage. Until I found the problem I had to go thru the glow plug warming routine a few times (ignition on wait, ignition off waiting, ignition on ect). Replaced the wiring just as it came out of the wiring loom. Also cleaned up the connections to the glow plug from the voltage rail.

I've also had the same problem with the wiring to no.1 glow plug

After I fixed that I went ahead and replaced the plugs anyway, they read close to specs, but I wanted to anyway and be done with it.

Well even in single digit temps it's starts brilliant, even happy to start without waiting for the light to go out.

Money well spent I reckon.

Does the glow plug heater work on a timer system or does it waite for the plug to reach a certain temperature ? I expect it's all (including the light on the dash) on a timer system. Any comments..

I've been getting an error message every time I submitted my post :?
So I kept trying and finally gave up :x
Then when I checked this thread it had posted them every time :?
What the heck is going on :?:
Plus I can't seem to be able to delete them :!:
Next time I'll only submit it once, even if it does give me some error message :)

Thanks for your input 'burner' and '4runna',

I've run the multi over them and they seem ok,
I cleaned up all the conections, some looked a bit
They're getting 12V for the whole time they're on,which
is'nt all that long (about 3-4 seconds) is yours similar???

And it made no diff, still the same.

I think I'll just replace them like '4runna' has.

'burner', I tend to agree that they must be on a timer as
it's always been the same length of time as far as I can
remember.

'4runna' did go Genuine or after market for your glowplugs ???
