How to turn/trade an FZJ80 into a tourer.

Post by Glenn-80 »

I own a 93 FZJ80 and I have pretty much joined the ranks with the rest of the world and decided that the fuel consumption and inability to play in water is NOT in my best interests (plan to do a fair bit of touring).

I am trying to weigh up my options. I would really love to stick with a toyota engine (could be persuaded, maybe, otherwise).

Grab a cheap ass 1hz and turbo it, Grab a pricey ass 1hd, orrrr.... what else? Price is of concern, so are things like reliability and fuel consumption. Not to mention maybe just ditching my petty and rebuying. But, I have to consider time and money already spent on my current vehicle and if I were to rebuild the next one or swap parts.

Suggestions?

Note: Brisvegas motor imports quoted me about 7.5k for a 1hd-t (though turn over is unreliable).

My 2 cents but you can buy lots of fuel with $7500 in your pocket. And what are you buying for that? A clapped out 1HD that could potentially need pump, turbo, injectors, new head etc. Agree you could also get a good one that runs forever but it's a lot of money to risk.

See what the comp guys are doing about water ingress on the 1fz maybe.

Heaps out there to fight water issues, plug up dizzy drain, plumb an air line into it.
Sell cruiser and buy a 1hdt or get lpg to save on fuel costs.

My vehicle use to run gas. It did a head (exhaust valve seats I guess or whatever the common problem is). I know the price difference is a lot of fuel but I figure Id prefer the outlay to start then the consistent shight mileage. Not to mention diesel is just easier to get out in the middle of nowhere and you will get a better range.

The dizzy I have been meaning to plug and plumb a line.

ATM seriously considering a 1hz with a safe amount of boost. Naturally not a very economic diesel, but I figure the turbo would help.

Decisions...

I'd sell yours and look for a TD if you really want one.
