G'day,Im lookin at buying a 92 2.8L turbo lux with 180,000kms,the bloke selling it said he hasent changed the oil in 8000kms,
can a 2.8l go that long without sludging?he said it isnt but i dont wanna drive 6 houres to have a look if its

we have a 1997 2.8L at work which has been serviced at toyota service intervals which is 10,000 i think, it has well over 400,000 and being a work car it doesn't get treated gently - still going strong. 8000km will be fine

8,000km shouldn't be sludging.
5,000km oil changes are ideal in a turbo diesel but 3,000 over once in a while won't cause any catastrophic failures.

ok thanks fella's,its just my mate had the same model(non turbo) and it sludged up after 10,000,it had a fair few more kms but.

What do you mean by sludging? If its got good quality diesel engine oil in it theres no reason it cant go 10,000ks between services

oil turned to shit(wouldnt drain) and no#4 bearing got blocked up,end result was new crank etc i think,my mechanic said they shouldnt really go past 5000km without change but as ray said few thousand over once in a while shoudnt hurt ay.

No it shouldnt hurt it at all. If its so thick it wont drain out id be looking at other causes, maybe wrong type of oil for one. What was the colour like. Could you see the black carbon particles in the oil? How much oil was in the sump?
In ten years as a diesel fitter Ive only seen oil not drain once (old P40? petrol patrol motor Iirc) an that engine hadnt run in over 10 years .
When I took over my latest work ute (07 Ranger with 250000k on it) it hadnt been serviced in 25000k cos the last guy that drove it couldnt be bothered getting it into Ford to get it changed. It was black as you'd expect but other than that it was normal when I changed it.
I've also got a mate who has a 2.8 an a 3L hiace courier van. Both had over 650000k on the original engines last time I saw them an he only services them every 10000ks

It also depends on how they are driven. ie: i mostly do very short drives (3km x 2) taking my dog out and the oil doesn't get hot.
in the manual that's classed as severe and it says for that to change the oil at 2,500km and filter at 5,000km which i do.
Since i've had the engine reconditioned and started using delo 400 i take it on a good hard run where it can maintain the correct temp thus the oil can do it's job in cleaning behind the rings ect.
If you drive longer trips daily it's ok to do them at 5k.. But i wouldn't let them go 10k.

We had an old 2H Landcruiser at work that wouldnt drain the oil until we stuck a screwdriver in the sump plug hole.
obviously it didnt have alot of space in the sump so it only took a few litres of oil.
We changed the oil a couple times to help clean the crap out, and as far as I know that thing is still going, and gets better every 5,000km the new owner changes the oil.
2.8L Hilux engine takes about 40,000km without an oil change to shit itself, and when it does it isnt due to sludging, it due to low oil level due to the usual burning a bit and not being topped up.

The old Luxy was fun, but with a young family comes great responsibility.
So I swapped it for a 60. Should be able to take the whole mob camping, plus I got an extra gear, 2 less cylinders and A/C.

Yes i know a bloke that never checked oil levels, drove from canberra to sydney and then looked to find it had none on the stick.. he filled it up, drove back and about a month later it sun a bearing/seized.
But i got my hilux which had 40k on it.. I changed oil/filters regularly and at 84k it spun a bearing. It was always the correct level.
The mechanic could only guess that the damage had been done prior to me getting it. As the clutch was more or less buggered in it but i still drove it to 270k before getting it replaced. Also when i got it there was no signs of flung off grease around the unis steering ect.. So whoever had it treated it like crap in my opinion.
I don't think i'll be letting it go to 40k without changing the oil just to see how long before it goes bang
