80s GXL wheels on 60 do they fit? how?

Post by Hilux_Ryan »

Pretty obvious, looking to fit a set of 80 series GXL 16x8 steel rims onto my FJ62 because 15x7 sunnys just dont cut it, and I like the look of them.

Had the car on the hoist at work yesterday, grabbed a rim with 265/75 tyre fitted and held it in place front and rear, seemed to fit and rotate OK, only a couple mm away from the tierod end though.I think it will fit and be OK as everything moves together, apart from maybe when the tierod twists?

The boss reckons they dont fit, but we tried fitting some racing wheels from a 80 on his HJ61 and they jammed on the tierod end, I reckon these rims have a slightly different offset or simple thicker material as they were alloys and not the pressed steel like the GXL rims.

Does anyone have first hand experience yay or nay?

They seem to fit perfectly, I would have bolted a set on if we had more than one fitted up with a tyre at work lol.

And only looking to fit probably 265 tyrees at this stage.
The old Luxy was fun, but with a young family comes great responsibility.
So I swapped it for a 60. Should be able to take the whole mob camping, plus I got an extra gear, 2 less cylinders and A/C.

Did 60series rims have any offset? From memory they have 25mm offset?
80series rims have zero offset, which might explain why a 16" rim is cIoser to the tierod

80s gxl rims wouldn't fit my hj75 which has the same nuckles as a 60. Interfered badly on the tre if I recall correctly. Did you torque up the wheel nuts or just hold the rim on by hand?

I only held it in place, but it was hard against the flange. There was no problem on the knuckle, only on the steering arm, and I think they are different 75 to 60.

Maybe I should go 17" wheels, they would clear easily lol.
