Hydro assist on lux, something is wrong..

Post by brad 93hilux »

Put hydro assist on lux and noticed after on stands it felt heavier then it was, put tyres back on and it's almost like it has no power steer.
91MAV drilled out the power steer pump oriface and shimmed spring 1.2mm and rebuilt power steer box n tapped it, and it seems to be all hooked up right.

Had it on stands and steered left/right maybe 20 times, but no change.

Is this likely to be air in the system or something? What do you think

I think Brad was to tight to buy a pump or change the size of the pulley if the veins in the pump a big enough to flow :finger:

There must have been a big airlock in the system because back up in stands i went full lock to lock like 40 times and squeezed another 400ml of fluid into it, so that means i have around 1.3-1.4L in the system now.

Now it will sit on the spot on concrete and turn 35" simex's where as standard steering struggled.

Its not something like air in the system is it Brad??
Last year at TTC, with Twons brand spanking new hydro steer setup, we spent half sunday bleeding it, but it still was playing up. It would turn ok on stands, but bugger all steering on the ground. He did a track and got on a good angle and a heap of air came out.
We mustve bled it like 50-60 times.

Disclaimer, I know nothing about hydro steer, or hydro assist, so please excuse my dumbassedness on this topic.

Yeh it's air in the system I think. I watched fluid while wife went left/right over n over n over again and every now n then a bubble came out.. That's where another 400odd ml disappeared.

But out of 2L (some wasted) ive ran out of fluid, so tomorrow will buy another 1L bottle and maybe a alloy catch can and have another crack at it.. But it's alot better then it was.

Crack them and steer I'm guessing? I tried it without steering and straight fluid came out.

How are your ram mounts oriented? They can be a bitch to bleed if they point down.

Could you have a return restriction?

There like this if u can see by pics. It is working now just not 100% all the air is out, I didn't get a chance to play this arvo but ill add the inline canister which will hold a extra 370ml of fluid and keep trying to get air out.
It is already much better then stock steering, I can at least turn the simex's sitting still on the concrete.

Down the track I will go the proper power steer pump but for now this'll do.
