getting a gen 3 running, gearbox choice
i am competing in the obc next year. GQ
i have managed to locate a gen 3 for good dollare with 15ooo klms on it.
i was wondering if anyone has got one running without aftermarket computers. i am told it is possible with the factory loom and comp. is there anti theft crap like the commodores.
secondly what gearbox do you reccommend. i have never liked auto's but am told thet a turbo 700 is a great choice with a lockup in all gears. i am worried about the realiability of the auto having such a small "neck" joing the transfer. heard of one breaking already, and my duel transfer puts extra strain on this area. i have a manual at the moment.
gearing as follows
i will run 4:11's, 37's, 2x stock transfer ratios.
cant decide
cheers bru

The delco ecu is on eof the best around.
If you have one from a holden it will have secuity built into it.
This can be removed/deleted and you can also upgrade HP aswell.
Only problem you MAY have with late model autos is water prooofing the electronics.
IMHO use the auto. Im sure water proofing can be done.

To get a reilable 5speed gearbox to handle any sort of power your up for big $$$
Auto's seem to be a much cheaper choice for higher power applications and seems to be the reason most go that way
Of course with enough $$$ anything can be done and if you have your heart set on a manual check out a chev NV4500 they come in 2 forms the Chev and the dodge so shop around but these are big $$$ units but give you a granny low and an overdrive so you get the best of both worlds

i can tell you now that the t700 will NOT lock up in all gears
(sheesh)
lock up is bypassed in first gear on the hydraulic side of things.
the only way you can get this to work is by doing a EXPENSIVE mod to the valve body
in 2nd, 3rd and forth, simply suppling 12vs to the lock up soleoid will work but not in first

Alright.. u want a gen3 and want to know where to get the shit from...
I did it all in a VK..
pic in
Now.. you'll need to chase up matt@injectedholdens.com @ www.injectedholdens.com to convert your loom to suit your car.. he does an awesome price to convert the gen3's loom to suit the vehicles harness of your choie by supplying your wiring manual (as in gregorys books)
FOR ECU - they dont use delco - use a proper gen3 ECU - PCM - powertrain control module - now the problem witht hem is they rely on the BCM = body control module which does alarms and keys etc.
You'll need to have a chat to matt @ above and have him subcontract Daniel @ www.chipmaster.com.au to remove the BCM linkage on the ECU/PCM so the engine can run on the computer only with the ignition switch turnin the PCM on via some wires and turnin starter on same time. Also Daniel as well as Matt will supply a led light for engine diagnosis which is very good for working out what went wrong etc.
any problems u can PM me and id be more than happy to outline what u can do etc.

thanks fellas for thr help so far.
gq box will handle the v8 power (mark's adaptors said they handle even high output v8's)
what are the approxmite costs for the loom and bcu mods above, i have emailed matt, but would like a rough cost sooner
if its straight foward loom making i will do it myself, just get the necessary tricky computer Bits done.
sorry for my lack of auto knowlege
my navie knows the story (mechanic) but he is in broom till dec
i want to know it now
cheers bru

got a quote for the auto box - t700 no lock up in 1st, 2nd 3rd and 4th low throttle only. $1000 for s/h box $2000 for rebuild.
gen 3 box $2200 plus shift comp installed $2000 - $4200
plus ~$1000 for marks kit.
think auto's too dear.
manual kit with new 11" clucth etc is ~$1500.
thanks

I voted auto (biiiig fan of auto's in the bush) but I think I have reconsidered..... I reckon for general off road use I'd go auto, but for OBC, I think a manual will be the go.

Might be a little bit expensive for you but we have Brand New out of the crate 4L80E (4 Speed T/400) 4 speed automatic transmission that we then take a part and turn into an Extreme Stage II Fully Manual transmission with Lock-Up in all gears including 1st and reverse. No electronics except the Lock-Up Manual Control Kit.

Standard Nissan or GM clutch won't handle the loading your talking.
Factor in extra dollars for H/D clutch.
For the goose neck on the auto, build a cradle to carry transfer and auto to spread the load, the same as manufacturers do with the brace from the engine to the bottom of the bell housing.

go manual.
they are strong as.
they are much more simple.
not electronically controlled in anyway.
no extra fabbing needed like, crossmembers, transfer adaptors. (just get the marks kit etc.)
if 2nd gear busts on a manual you still have 4 others to get you home. if a auto busts your up the creek.
you need to run coolers for the auto.
there is no way a gen 3 can break a good GQ box. even a worked gen 3 would have trouble.
big blocks dont even break 75series 5 spd's.
