Choosing gear ratio's

Planning and purchasing for my Hilux project and am looking at diff's, gears, transfer reduction etc..

The power is from a 1UZ to a 4 speed auto through a Hilux transfer to Landcruiser diff centres turning 315/75X16 (35's) tyres, maybe 37's for play, this car will also have full N.T rego .

Up here we don't have a lot of hills (but will be making the most of what we have) and a lot of this vehicles work will be corrougated dirt at moderate speeds, a bit of mud and possibly the Townsville and Mackay comps if it ends up being good enough.

My original plan was 4.8 diff gears and 4.7 transfer gears, I was speaking to a fellow Outers member who thought for my use, this set-up may be too low a gearing .

Anybody have a similar set-up ? Would taller diff gears be better with the transfer reduction ? or stay with the diff reduction and lose the transfer reduction ?

I would start with the diff gears and then work out if you need the transfer gears by driving it. I don't think you will, as an automatic pulls higher gearing much easier. However if you are undergeared in the diffs then the vehicle will be a slug everywhere.

4.8's with the 35's sound like it would bring the rpms back to standard hilux speeds. It wouldn't hurt to go lower with a 1uz. The 1uz is a higher revving engine, and lower gearing will give better acceleration in any driving condition.

I think the fellow outers member maybe on the money!!

When I'm home next and have put my gearbox back in, come and have a drive of mine, I think this will help make your mind up.

I found the 4.7's a pain in butt for anything other then steep stable rocks. Thats why I went with the duals with 4.7's in the rear case, it's the best of both worlds!

You could always go a Atlas!!!!!!!

Was there ever any doubt ? :finger:

So as of today I am now the proud owner of 3.9 ratio front and rear air locked centres . So 4.8's or 4.5 gears, either way I need to purchase transfer gears as the inchworm adapter is 23 spline .

Need a hand to put that gearbag in ? Id be keen as for even a ride in your Lux it looks like a weapon
