Will extractors and a 2 1/2 inch system make much of a difference to my 1hz???

I would recommend fairly strongly against K&N filters. they do flow more air, but at the expense of filtration - that is, they let more and bigger dirt particles though.

foam filters will flow more air than a factory paper filter when very clean but because they work by trapping the grit in oil suspended in the foam, they clog very quickly and after not a lot of km they flow less air than the paper type. Their filtration is highly dependent on the amount of oil in the foam and the age and condition of the foam. no mater how well you care for them the foam does age and break down.

the toyota factory filter is cleanable in water (as opposed to annoying turps and oil for foam or cotton filters) and flows more than enough air for a 1HZ.

Now the good news, the 1HZ does benefit immensely from a free flowing exhaust system including extractors, and tuning the injection timing and volume for optimim power.

After you get a couple of quotes for the exhaust work, take a look at the price of turbo kits, I believe 4WD systems leads the pack for price at the moment, you might think it's worth spending a little more (ok so it's a fair bit more) to get 50% more power instead of maybe 5 - 10% form extractors etc. It's far better value in terms of $ per extra kW or Nm.

Thanks for the tip Brian, but the 1hz has just clocked over 295,000kms, so i would have to spend even more $$$ to rebuild it ( not to mention the pump as well) before i would even think about adding a turbo.
But don't think i haven't thought about it

high km does not necessarily preclude turbo installation. if the engine has had good regular maintenance all its life then a compression check is really all that is necessary before turboing. You're due for a pump service and injector overhaul at 300,000km whether you turbo up or not, so they don't really add to the cost of the turbo upgrade.

if the engine doesn't consume a lot of oil and the compression is good then it's good turbo candidate, no reason why it won't live to see 500,000km even with the turbo.

although I understand the reluctance to spend a significant proportion of the value of the vehicle on a turbo and the 'zorst could well be the way to go to give it a bit more poke.

I just installes extractors, 2 1/2 half exhaust and a finer filter and have noticed a difference on my 80. It holds gears longer and is now much more enjoyable to drive on an more importantly, off road.

I don't have to imagine and since the whole turbo setup including exhaust, brand new, only cost me $1700 it was a no brainer really.

Should be able to get that for under $1000 - I got my Exhaust for $250.00 fitted with free flowing muffler - nice setup as well...

If you want responsiveness - get rid of the clutch fan and whack a set of XR8 thermo fans in - pretty staright forward. Little bit of booty fab'n and they fit nicely with no chopping!! I'm running them and combined with a little tune and the 2.5" exhaust - My bus goes nicely with 35's....

Turbo gets bought once I get my new tyres.... Then its boogie time...

Good luck - a 1HZ is also incredibly reliable - just throw a set of shells through the bottom edn if you decide on the Boost setup.

I can buy a full roller bearing turbo to suit my thing(1HZ) and good for 440hp for under $2000 - so where do you get prices like that?
