Howdy All...
Just asking a favor for a friend....
He has a 96 or so Wrangler, lifted, locked and 35's.
He has been complaining bout diffs for a while now and is looking at a Ford 9in.
What he would like to know is.....
a) is this a good swap?? Any particular model??
b) any reputable ppl who installs them, (in SE QLD)
c) or is there anything else that he should look at instead
Not being stupid....but money isnt too big a problem, but dont be silly and recommend really expensive ideas.
Has too be strong, has massive amounts of travel. Not sure wether is original heart or whether he has transplanted it.
Thanks,
Damien

CJer,
Pete's 9"er was rear only.....& MC's 9"ers were for a CJ..ie too narrow...They were only 56" WMS2WMS....whereas for a TJ you want about 59" (or more )
TOYrantula,
What's your mates problem with the D30? PLENTY of guys run it with 35" tyres & lockers without breakage?? Sure it's no Dana60 but it give reasonable strength and great clearance for 35" tyres....
Personally i wouldn't bother with the warn kits for the D30 - I've not been impressed with the supposed extra strength....esp with the hub fuses...
The other problem is that most diffs will have the pumpkin on the drivers side, whereas the TJ has passengener side pumpkin....Converting it to the opposite side IS doable but it's no small exercise (new exhaust, new transfer case etc)....
Personally I think that longer term I'll swap out the dana30, and the two main options that I'd consider are:
1. Swap to Driverside pumpkin - probably run Bronco/F100 with high offset rims, swap in Dan300 transfer case (and t18 tranny at the same time).....
2. Warmup the credit card and get a ProRock60....not cheap, but bloody strong and great clearance...

That is odd.....the guy who gave me the info (neighbour) told me that his mate had a D44....where as you were saying it is a D30. Are there any Wranglers that had a D44 or did he tell me the wrong diff??
Not home atm, so cant double check to see if D44 or D30
What is this prorock?? Is there a website for it and is there a place in SE QLD that distributes and/or installs??

The TJ has a Dana30 Front diff (which is what I assumed you were talking about) and they have a dana44 rear diff (in Aust).
So is it the front or rear diff that he's grumbling about? The rear dana44 is a fine diff and I would have no hesitation running 38" swamps with it.... So if it is I'd love to know his problems....
