came to some lights today, and the car stalled... Thought to my self, WTF?

Didnt think Autos would stall - as in have to restart the engine?

Ideas?

Dunno. If you roll them backwards in D they can stall also.

What RPM does it sit on normally at the lights?

torque converter???

Na its not the idle too low..

This has happened 2 times now... once about 12 mths ago out Pyrenees way, and then the other day at lights.

Weird shit.

If idle set ok, ~700 in drive, and filters clean, I would check wiring connections to fuel valve on pump, plugs in loom and fuse and links for corrosion.

We disconected the speedo on a 94 auto surf and it stalled all the time and wouldn't idle at all. Turns out that it must be a goverment conspircy to make sure that road users are paid. Wankers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Whats the story, don't you guys have to pay to have your roads fixed when you drive a stinky old diesel?

Autos will stall for all the same reasons that manuals will stall apart from having a bad driver behind the wheel. My brothers van has to be reved when in neutral then shoved into drive when the lights go green otherwise it always stalls.

our road useage taxes are built into the fuel prices - in Australia diesel is about the same price per litre as unleaded - I believe in NZ diesel is significantly cheaper - around NZ$.85/litre currently? we pay around A$1.05 at the moment.

you surf wouldn't work with the speedo disconnected because the ECU requires a signal from the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) to tell the engine whether it's in idle or drive mode (closed or open loop)- it is possible to disconnect the speedo but it has to be done at the instrument end, not at the sensor end. but it's pretty silly not to mention illegal.

This is interesting. When it stalled, did it just, er, stop... like you turned the key off, or did it load and labour a bit? If it just stopped, I would guess and engine problem. If it chugged at 300rpm, shuddered etc and then died, the it might be more likely it is related to the load of the converter.

Were you also stopped the first time it stalled?

I can make my (auto) G stall, but generally with some combination of idle set too low and/or rolling backwards, then easing the power on. The torque converter will bite a bit and it will stall if the revs are too low. (this generally only happens on steep hills off road. If it is up to tempereature and has a correct idle, it wont happen.

I'm no diesel guru, maybe there is some engine related problem rather than an effect being caused by the auto.

Was drivin for 45mins, so was warmed up, and just pulling upto the lights, rolling to the white line, it just went chug chug fart. Like turning key off but without the viabration!

The first time it happened same sort of thing, came to top of hill, slowing down, and it just shutdown.

Weird shit.. Looked today Idle is at around 600-650, but if that was an issue surely it would happen regularly?

Nope oil, water and coolant are fine.

Will look on weekend, Im feelin pretty average with a cold/flu comin on..

try getting the shutoff solinoid on the injector pump tested....
