Anybody had any experience with or heard of someone succefully running EFI on a 22R hilux engine? I know about Ruffs but I believe that it isn't practical on a DD.

EFI 22R
a few years ago I converted a 22R Bundera to EFI, pulled the manifold etc from a celica and used the computer, sensors, AFM, wiring etc out of a 2 litre Nissan Gazelle. it went pretty good, the biggest improvement was in low end torque. fuel economy and top end power were also up. if I was doing it agan I'd use the celica computer etc, better matched to the motor, or an aftermarket programmable computer.
anyway I still have that manifold, it's for sale if you want it. includes throttle body, probably still has TPS on it.

Thanks for the info dumbdunce! When I asked the question, I hoped that someone closer to home would reply. That way I could go to them and say "where does this part go?". As that doesn't seem to be the case but I've still got the info from you, I may have to go it alone. I'll have to work out it the results are worth the time, effort and $$. Certainly cheaper than a whole engine conversion.

there are a few sources of information that will help you. one is the DIYEFI email list - an international (predominantly USA) mailing list and website with stakcs of useful information. second, if you are going to use the celica wiring loom and computer, get the wiring diagram from a toyota service centre. try and talk to a toyota mechanic and get him to loan you the book. it's not rocket science but takes patience. the mechanicals are all fairly simple, the electricals are where the potential gremlins lie. Third I am willing to come to brisbane to help you but I only fly business class *grins*
to keep complexity to a minimum, I recommend you do these 2 things:
1. get a complete 22RE motor from a wrecked celica.
2. use a haltech or similar aftermarket computer and get a shop to tune it.
might end up costing a bit more but you will tear out a lot less hair!
if you're keen to go it alone well you've always got forums like this and DIYEFI to get help.

Once again - thanks for the good info. I'm sorta keen on doing it but if I have to get another motor then it all sounds a bit too much. I'm trying to avoid having to go to a commodore v6 and the expense involved in this process (as with any other engine conversion). Basically I'm tying to stop the biatch stalling on angles.
I'm sure the cost of what you have suggested, including the aftermarket comp and replacement motor would be be pretty steep.
With that said, I'm still keen to do some more research and explore my options.

Yeah I've thought about the supra conversion but my vehicle is already too hard/impossible to insure especially with an engine conversion. I didn't realise that the supra was efi though. That may make it worth the trouble?!
LPG will cost too much as will the aftermarket computer. I thought that diesels could still stuff up at big angles? Maybe it was just the oil pickup or something but I know that it was a toyota diesel.
I'm still considering my options though so keep the ideas coming.

any engine has trouble at extreme angles - biggest problem with diesels, especially turbos, is getting too much oil to the top of the motor, sucking it down the crankcase breather, and into the turbo, where it gets nicely atomised, and the engine starts running on its own oil. not good. I suppose if the fuel tank is close to empty you might start sucking air but that's as likely with efi, unless you have a separate surge tank - and the big fat filter on most diesels doubles as a surge tank anyway.
doesn't have to be a supra, you can get an M series engine from a cressida, I'm sure they were in other models too. it is an easy conversion, insurance shouldn't be a big issue, join a 4WDNSWACT affiliated club then you can get insurance with TCIS.
