The 3F in my middy
won't run at less then about 2100 when on a steep uphill climb. this is a real bitch on a loose surface & it's starting to give me the
sheets. Any Ideas ?? Carby float problem or do you think it needs a surge tank?

Are you getting any indication of rich or lean conditions? ie black smoke or high temps? What about steep downhill - any probs?

The engine is indeed stock, There is a set of extractors and a new exhaust system on the horizon though.
The vehiclee has no probs on steep downhills, it doesn't give any indications of other problems. when confronted with a steep uphill - if you keep into it there is no problem, but if you need to crawl up it tries to die. Have to keep the revs to about 2100RPM. I haven't started looking too closely yet, just thought I'd ask if it sounded familiar.

Sounds familiar to me!
my 2F does the exact same thing.
and once it does stall on a big hill, it takes a little bit to kick it over again.
are you sure that it isnt just the fact its a carby engine and it doesnt like steep uphills???

It could just be that it's a carby engine ... been a while since i've owned one, but it's a real sheet when your 90% up up a long loose steep climb and it decides to die. Even struggles to reverse key start under these conditions.
If the problem is carby & long steep incline don't mix - why will it run fine if I keep the boot in ??

try repacing all of the fuel filters.....a dirty filter realy kills a landcruiser

Replaced the filter today, while there I found that the flexible fuel lines around the filter weren't sealing worth a damn, so I replaced those as well.
I'll test it in the next few days to see if this has cured it.
