As im chasing some more horse power out of my 350 chev, But I need to know how much these gear boxes, diffs, and axles can handel.
I figer they should with stand a bit, but will 300hp+ (at the wheels) be too much. The vehicle is a short wheel base MQ patrol.

How much HP can the standard box and diff handel (MQ)
I'm hardly qualified to answer about the rest of the driveline, but if there's an offset 37-spline H260 to be had, that wouldn't flinch. I seem to think that (at least some of) the MQ H260s are only 31-spline though, and I know someone here blew one of those up.
In search of an MQ (offset) H233b rear, housing only preferred, plus a complete GQ or GU front (4.6 ratio ideal) to be shipped to the US. Cheap! Email/PM if you can help.
good question...
I am sure Kingy will have some input on this. Here's my take...
The boxes come from the Nissan truck factory so they are tough. Can they handle 300+ hp, I dunno. But I do know the Cabstar 5spd can handle that or more no probs. I would be more concerned with the diff's. An H260 rear should be able to handle it but we/I have heard of those breaking too. I personally think it will all come down to how you drive it. Lay rubber on the pavement and you are bound to break something.

God of Magnificant Ideas!
just joking .....
The MQ/MK & GQ boxes were made at the "truck driveline " section of nissan. The reason for this was that the Cabstar and similar model trucks / light commercial vehicles, ran an almost identical box to the 4x4's requirements so it was cheaper to utilise this facility for the gearbox production on these models. The gearboxes from this era are very strong and reliable as much of the internals are "truck tough parts". They easilly handle 500cubic motors and there are quite a few of us running 350's and 400 ci motors up to them.
When dealing with "truck tough parts" you have to appreciate that trucks are designed to handle a lot more kilometres than a std familly car is designed to do in its life time and then theres the "weight factor" that trucks are designed to carry where the car is never really going to carry any where near the weight.
The weakest link in the drive line is the tailshafts, specifically the front shaft on SD33 to V8 converted models. The shaft has a thick wall tube but the tubes diameter isnt large enough to handle the power. The L28 front shaft is shorter than the SD33 shaft and its this "shortening" that gives it strength over the longer unit.
I have a 4 spd box here that has over 700,000 k's on it ...... originally powered by a SD33 then fitted to an L28 at around the 430,000Ks mark then to a 308 with an additional 260,000 k's since it was fitted to the L28. the box has developed some minor sincro problems in 1st gear only and has the slightest bearing noise in 3rd gear. It is occasionally "difficult to engage" in 1st gear if the vehicle is not at a complete stop.
I have rebuilt a couple of 4 spds mainly for sincron reasons and have been amazed at the excelent condition of the enternals in general, the cost of rekitting a 4 spd really isnt viable because they are so cheap to buy from a wrecker in comparrision to the costs of the bearings etc.
GU boxes are made at the "car section" and arent as strong as their predecessors.....

And your cry-baby, whinyassed opinion would be.....?
They are definately pretty strong but also depends on how you treat them, I just stuffed a transfer case, 383 chev twin lockers and 36's, surprised i didn't do a cv as i was giving it a lot of stick, and the t/c actually held on for a week before breaking.
So in short, if you've got enough traction and power, you can break things.
But don't worry too much mq stuff is cheap... so just go for more power, drive it till it breaks, fix it and then back off a little bit
