Broken MK 5 Speed :(

Post by MKPatrolGuy »

Was driving home from Toolangi yesterday, travelling about 70-80 km/h when suddenly the car started thudding. Pushed the clutch in and the thud went away, shifted from 5th down to 4th and the sound didn't come back. Oh well I thought, guess I have a 4 speed for now. Slowed down to turn a corner and shifted into 3rd and the thudding came back...Crap!

It does it in all forward gears (don't know about reverse yet) except 4th (straight through). Anyone have any ideas what could have happened? I'm thinking maybe I have taken a tooth off a gear.

TIA

My gut feeling is that it's almost guaranteed that, whatever the diagnosis ends up being, your best bet is gonna end up being to find a 2nd hand five speed and put it in.

... unless it's just crap in the clutch. Doubtful but you never know.

I was expecting that sort of price.

Can anyone recommend a good Transmission place in the Outer Eastern suburbs of Melbourne? Preferably around the Ringwood, Bayswater sort of area.

Well if its not present in 4th, which is just the input shaft linked to the output shaft, id say the problem lies in your counter shaft! A thud, i dunno it could be a root out bearing or something?

Ive got a whine in 5th, it scares me :(

My MK did same thing out of the blue. Shat 5th gear and all others started making whining noises. I had to keep driving around for about 2 weeks after that. Reverse will probably be the next to go because its on the same shaft as 5th. I got a low kilometre import box and transfer case for $1300 from KJ Motors & fwd in Geelong. They got it from Japan where they use MK nissans as Fire Trucks!!

So what actually died in yours. Did the gears lose any teeth or what?
