Best all terrain tyre
Im looking for new AT tyres in sizes 225/75/R16 or 235/70/R16. Currently i have bfgs and im thrilled with them. Most of my driving is on road, and on beach tracks. I need a LT construction.

If your happy with BFG, then stick with them.
I loved the S/Ts when I had them (31x10.5) but they were happy to dig in loose sand. At reduced pressures they were fine, but I was always "waiting" for them to dig.
The less aggressive BFGs may be the best thing for your driving. If you want to save money, consider the Silverstones - look similar to the BFGs, perform quite well on fire trails (from what I've seen) and significantly cheaper. No idea on wear...

What constiutes an "all terrain" tyre is very dependent on where you live and what driving you do. Personally, I think that most tyre manufacturers consider an all terrain tyre as one step more agressive than a highway tyre. This is nonsense.
I think that "all terrain" means just that, and therefore for us in Vic I consider a BFG mud terrain an "all terrain" tyre. I think that would therfore also mean that stuff like MTR's, X-Terrains and Radial claws are "All Terrain" tyres.
If you are looking for a good highway tyre with some off road capability, I would go for a BFG all terrain. I have been very impressed with a range of cars running these, even in terrain that they weren't really designed for. they are really excellent in sandy conditions with light rock etc where a more aggressive tyre (including a mud terrain, or swamper for that matter) does not have enough biting edges to gain traction.

for a road biased 4x4 tyre i don't think you could beat the BFG AT, they wear very well, can handle a range of conditions and work on a wide variety of vehicles both light and heavy.
If you're doing a little more offroad as steve said have a look at the BFG MT or the Goodyear MTR.
Personally i haven't had any good expirence with the Cooper ST's, generally they wear unevenly and end up louder than most agressive mud patterns in very short time.

yeah i might stick to the BFGs All terrain. Here in WA we got mostly sand, and small sharp rock. The only really common mud we get is up north in the wet, but driving on wet tracks wrecks them. I was considering Coopers AT, Bridgestone AT or Kumho AT (cheap). BFG are the only ones with 3 ply sidewall, and certainly look the most aggressive and capable off road.

I had mine (31x10.5) for over 30k km without problems. Rotated every 10k km, 38 psi on road, 24 off-road. Only took them off to go to 33" tyres, and the MT/Rs were available at the right price - off OL!
When it's time to replace the MT/Rs I'll be considering the S/Ts again.

I have BFG A/T tyres and I wouldn't recommend them for rock. Whenever I come back from a 4wd park they look all chewed up with cuts through the treads and missing bits of rubber.
However thy wear excellent on the road. I put them on at 86k and now they have 60k on them (4 tyre rotation) and they have about 30k left in them I reckon. Although I will probably give them 15-20k before they are useless offroad.
I have never had a puncture. I had one flat from too low pressure and making a sharp turn though.
I have used them on bitumen, sand, dirt, mud, rock. Work well on all but mud and as I said the rock chews them.

Cooper St's are the way to go
I have a set of Cooper ST's 235/75/16 on my Vitara, but you will need a lift to fit them, they have done 80,000 kms and still have life in them, they are great off road and are pretty good on the raod as well
4WD monthly has a test in the current issue (big guns coming out in the next issue).
Coopers STT came in just behind the BTGoodrich Muddies. I am going for the Serengeti M/T. While this tyre is not as good on the road handling, it out preformed both the above in the Mud and the BF on the Rocks (equal to the STT).
What the Serengeti really has going fot it is price. I called a local tyre dealer that stocks them and got quoted $155 for 30.5" and $165 for 32" ($100 cheaper per tyre than the other two). Yeah, not an AT but...

you are joking, right? the cooper ST's are very noisy, the sidewalls are made of kraft cheese, they are hopeless on any kind of terrain, the tread crumbles and falls off in chunks, they're not comfortable at any pressure unless you air them down to the point they roll off the rims. I wish I'd bought MT/R's.

Mate I suggest the Maxxis MT753 not quite as aggressive as the 754 which is what I use and their quite a tough radial tyre.Check them out on the website www.maxxis.com

Now there you go Brian - your experience is different to mine. I went from S/Ts to MT/Rs (31" to 33") and I will look at the S/Ts again when the time comes.
Obviously, driving a Paj I'm not a hard-core rock crawler - but fire trails never gave me a problem. Never had problems with the tread falling off (Cooper claim that was a compound problem with early tyres, since fixed), never thought the comfort was an issue (except at 38psi on fire trails - go figure! ) The MT/Rs are noisier, won't balance properly (although that could be the cheap steel rims) and I'm not convinced they're performing any better on loose hills, despite lower pressures.
I should probably trailer both sets out to LCMP some time and compare back to back - maybe I expected too much out of the MT/Rs?
