Rust in SWB Sierra

Im sick of looking at the rust and need advice. The area that has rust is the strip of metal that holds the tailgate seal. The previous owners used it for hobby farm animal transport and it ended up trampled down.

I have gone over it with a wire brush to remove a heap on the surface after pulling the seal off, and there is now quite a rough edge. Should i cut it off and weld on some angle section to hold the seal, or try and save what little metal is left and weld some strip onto that?

Or should i take it to a panel beater and get them to do it?

try looking round the wreckers for a rust-free tailgate before you start doing any hard work on the current one. would definitely save youself some time and effort if you could find one.

The strip that holds the seal is part of the body.

This was totally shagged on my tin top, but is perfect on my soft top (WFT?)

I'd grind it flat with a flap disk and live without a seal.

Note the seal is just a water/mud trap.
