Hilux centres into Rover axles

Post by TuffRR »

I am aware that this topic has been discussed on other posts but I need to apply the theory to my situation.
I currently have a Maxidrive rear axle/difflock and a McNamara front axle/difflock. The front McNamara uses Hilux axles and CV’s.
After doing the sums, I have calculated that I need diff ratios of about 4.7. I don’t want Rover ones as they are too weak (standard Range Rover diff) or too expensive (400 pounds a set from GBR).
What is required to fit the Hilux centres? I would think (in my unedumacated opinion) that the front should be compatible, but perhaps the difflock wouldn’t be?
The maxidrive in the rear may not be so easy, I really don’t know. :?: :?:
Any advice would be great.

Q: How can you have hilux axles and CV's, but not a hilux diff centre in the front???

First the ratio part - if you really want hilux diffs with 4.7:1 ratios you will need to buy the special ratio hilux R%P from macnamara - about $500 each. If you can put up with 4.88:1 you can get diffs from diesel hiluxes with that ratio. So first you need to get a 4:88 rear and a 4:88 high pinion front - about $300-500 each. If you already have a hilux centre in the front all you need to do is put the 4:88 r&P but will probably need to buy a whole diff for this.

For the rear - macnamara should be able to sell you either: 24 spline side gears for the hilux diff to match your maxi-drive axles, or copies of the maxi-drive axles but with 30-spline inners to match the hilux diff (you can then sell your complete Rover centre and the MD axles - may know someone who is interested). Don't forget need to redrill bolt holes in hilux diff centre to match up with rover casing. However, now your diff lock is no good because there is nothing for the dog to lock on to, so unless Mal/jacmac can solve this for you you may as well sell the complete maxidrive and get a macnamara/ARB hilux locker.

For the front... someone else will have to tell you as I am not completely familiar with the macnamana setups - probably similar to front.

Depends,
Is your front Mac a hypoid centre using hilux gears? If it still has rover gears and housing but Mac locker/axles and toy CV's the best option is to offload your both your centres and axles and start again with toy bits.

I dont think 4.88 is available in HP toy, perhaps aftermarket gears? I think stock is only available in 4.11.

Unless you can manufacture or have manufactured a new hemisphere half for the toy hemi that will accept the locking dog from the maxi/mac they are useless in this app. Besides using bits and pieces of what youve got devalues it and will end up costing you more in the long run.

Offload what youve got for $2000 if theyre in good nick and youll have the cash to convert to s/h 4.88 open hilux centres and 30 spline mac axles. Now you can turn your big tyres (?) but not go as far off-road cause your not locked anymore. Unless youve got the $ for ARB's?

If your budget is tight youll have to either wait or compromise, ie go to 1.4 high range and live with low range and have your current lockers (you can do this for less than $1000, especially if you offload your current tcase and get a s/h 1.4 case), or do the hilux diffs and live without lockers.

Cant have your cake and eat it too when your on a budget, bang for the buck in terms of short term capability I'd stay with what you've got diff wise if your not busting bits.

More info on what you want to do, ie tyre size, type of driving, engine and box youve got/want might make for different answers.

Re your post in general about CW&P, I spoke to mac today and you can run a rover hemisphere with hilux gears in a hilux case.
you need:
- a 162 thou washer under the crown wheel
- modified hemi and/or modified crown wheel
- new carrier bearings to suit maxi id and hilux od

note:
the hilux ring gear internal dia is 24 thou bigger than the rover.
you can either redrill the ring gear or the hemi.

Could be convinced to sell my rear Hypoid Maxi Drive 4.7 Ratio in flat bottomed housing. Done under 10,000km on new 4.7 Hypoid gearset and rebearinged. All new lines and switches. 28 Spline. Everything but stub axles, hubs and brakes.
