i've been told that i can replace the sump gasket on my 88 4 runner myself, by a few 4WDers. but a quick glance in the haynes manual says the engine needs to be removed to replace the gasket for 4WD's with IFS.
so, whats the go? can i do it myself, and save $200?

I would just jack up the motor and that will give you more height to work.Even if it cant be completely removed, you could sort of have it hanging there and do it up there. either way seems to be a pita to do it.
Good luck

Having been under mine recently and thinking the same thing, pull the front bas plate off, this should give u all the room u need (not knowing how low the crank extends into the sump) becausse all you need to do is undoe all the bolts and slide it in/out.
Have also been told to instead of using a gasket, run a bead of heat proof sikaflex - cheaper and provides a better seal than the gasktet which can squeeze out as u tighten up the bolts.

If its IFS u have to drop the front diff at the lower cross member to do get the sump off. It is not hard just time consuming.
This may help:
