Its a bit quiet in here the last week or two so I thought I would try and make some of my own conversation.
What do people think about the possibilities of putting widetrack diffs under a coilly and then doing a coil conversion. Advantages would include
1) the ability to run a front locker,
2) stronger axels and cv's (so ive been told)
3) Also it would be a good opportunity create a stonger and more flexy suspension set up
4) take the opportunity to extend the wheelbase forwards
5) keeps everything suzuki
Disadvantages may include:
1) narrower diffs so front wheels would have to be a different offset to rear.
2)cost

I am pretty sure the front diff of a coily is a lot smaller than a w/t hence the w/t centre would not fit.
I believe the best solution here would be w/t diff the front with new and improved suspension and than change the ratio in the back diff to suit the front.
Lock em all up = near unstoppable

I have spent a fair while messing around with this idea on Paul Greenwoods Coiler.
This is a great idea, but more work than it appears.
Diff ratio is the same as a leaf NT @ 3.9:1 WT is 3.7
The tie rod is in front of the diff in a WT, so it will require changes to the panhard rod placement.
WT centre is not reverse rotation (high pinion) so you cannot fit coiler knuckles with the tie rod behind the axle- it will hit the centre.
I understand that there are no interchangable parts between the coiler diff and the WT.
When meausring it up it looked possible to actually improve panhard rod geometry with this conversion, but the whole thing is a fair bit of work.
With regard to toyota diffs, It would be possible with a bundera front diff, as the general configuration is the same, but these diffs are pretty dear, have a 4.88 ratio (mostly) will add heaps of width, weight and lost ground clearance, and be even more work to fit. 6stud v 5 stud, issues with diff to chassis/sump clearance and lots of other problems.

Once installed, the crossover drag link and tie rod will be competing for room with your panhard rod, chassis, etc.

add heaps of width? ive only got a few inches over most people with zuk diffs. and width isnt a bad thing
heeps of weight? its unsprung so its only goin to help it
u wouldnt even lose 1 inch of ground clearance. plus u can always shave the diff anyways
u shouldnt have any troubles with chassis or sump clearance
6 stud rims are cheap and every where.

I have a bundy front under my zook ( was 2K for front and rear diffs with everything on them!!! ) and I was led to believe that the most common ratio on the bundies was 4.55 (cos its a high pinion, and they were expensive to get higher ratios for)???
Definately a good mod, as it keeps both front and rear driveshafts offset to the same side as your zook axles.

But isn't the front diff of the Jimny still weak and you need to piss fart around to get locker into it..
you can buy jimny front lockers no piss farting around. Its the jimny front that can be modified to suit coilly. Also the springs and shocks are seperate so your not limited as much to the travel you can acheive. I dont know about the strength of the diffs but Ive heard the control arms arnt much better then coillys.

I havnt been at all unhappy with it so far exept for gearing.

Sell the coily don't do it....
I believe there is more individualism in modifying a coily (I might borrow rbzooks flame suit). There is a well worn formula you can follow to get your leafy to perform but not so for a coily. People keep telling me I can't sucessfully mod my coily ZooK and that just makes me more determined.
