Wide track diffs under coilly

Its a bit quiet in here the last week or two so I thought I would try and make some of my own conversation.

What do people think about the possibilities of putting widetrack diffs under a coilly and then doing a coil conversion. Advantages would include

1) the ability to run a front locker,
2) stronger axels and cv's (so ive been told)
3) Also it would be a good opportunity create a stonger and more flexy suspension set up
4) take the opportunity to extend the wheelbase forwards
5) keeps everything suzuki

Disadvantages may include:
1) narrower diffs so front wheels would have to be a different offset to rear.
2)cost

Question for Sam
What would it cost to get front only coil conversion into coilly sierra?

I realise it may be easyer to go widetrack front and rear or hilux front and rear.

Question for everyone?
Would there be less mucking around in the steering department with widetrack diffs instead of hilux?

I wouldn't say its a coil 'conversion" if you just un-pick and rewelding the factory mounts.

why not just swap the centres, axles and cv's?

I was under the impression that they use the same housing and only the internals are different but Im probably wrong as usual! :D

can anyone shed some light? surely it isnt this simple people would have done it.

My 2 cents

I am pretty sure the front diff of a coily is a lot smaller than a w/t hence the w/t centre would not fit.

I believe the best solution here would be w/t diff the front with new and improved suspension and than change the ratio in the back diff to suit the front.

Lock em all up = near unstoppable

I just realised even if the housing is the same thickness you would need custom axels because the diff housing is a different length.
If I took a tape measure to the diff housings front and rear, If the front is the same size as rear would this tell me anything?

Sam,

I have spent a fair while messing around with this idea on Paul Greenwoods Coiler.

This is a great idea, but more work than it appears.

Diff ratio is the same as a leaf NT @ 3.9:1 WT is 3.7
The tie rod is in front of the diff in a WT, so it will require changes to the panhard rod placement.
WT centre is not reverse rotation (high pinion) so you cannot fit coiler knuckles with the tie rod behind the axle- it will hit the centre.

I understand that there are no interchangable parts between the coiler diff and the WT.

When meausring it up it looked possible to actually improve panhard rod geometry with this conversion, but the whole thing is a fair bit of work.

With regard to toyota diffs, It would be possible with a bundera front diff, as the general configuration is the same, but these diffs are pretty dear, have a 4.88 ratio (mostly) will add heaps of width, weight and lost ground clearance, and be even more work to fit. 6stud v 5 stud, issues with diff to chassis/sump clearance and lots of other problems.

 what about hilux diffs?

To fit a hilux diff under the front of a coil sierra, you would have to deal with a large range of clearance issues with the tie rod/drag link and panhard rod.

Hilux's have "boomerang" steering- the steering box sweeps forwards and backwards and there is a n arm on the knuckle that runs around the back of the shock on the drivers side that then turns teh knuckle and tie rod. this means that to convert to crossover steering (ala sierra) you would need a commercial crossover steering kit ($$$$) or make your own.

Once installed, the crossover drag link and tie rod will be competing for room with your panhard rod, chassis, etc.

This is possible, but it will be a major job, and like with most leaf hilux diff conversions, require a fair bit of lift to make fit, adding to the complexity for your application due to "problematic" radius arm mounts, shock lengths etc.

um hello.......mud4b has lux diffs under it! :finger:

coily and leaf are totally different.....the only thing the same is the oil seals and the swivel bearings.... :D

add heaps of width? ive only got a few inches over most people with zuk diffs. and width isnt a bad thing

heeps of weight? its unsprung so its only goin to help it

u wouldnt even lose 1 inch of ground clearance. plus u can always shave the diff anyways

u shouldnt have any troubles with chassis or sump clearance

6 stud rims are cheap and every where.

I have a bundy front under my zook ( was 2K for front and rear diffs with everything on them!!! :? ) and I was led to believe that the most common ratio on the bundies was 4.55 (cos its a high pinion, and they were expensive to get higher ratios for)???

Definately a good mod, as it keeps both front and rear driveshafts offset to the same side as your zook axles.

No wonder I damn near killed myself unloading the w/t front diff out of the passenger footwell of the Vitara alone.

if your looking at putting wt leafys under it....why mess around that much..

put some jimny diffs under it...

very close to sierra coily diffs but better..

How is the Jimny diffs better :?:

But isn't the front diff of the Jimny still weak and you need to piss fart around to get locker into it..

you can buy jimny front lockers no piss farting around. Its the jimny front that can be modified to suit coilly. Also the springs and shocks are seperate so your not limited as much to the travel you can acheive. I dont know about the strength of the diffs but Ive heard the control arms arnt much better then coillys.

Sam,

Just a suggestion - sell your coily and buy a leaf sprung sierra instead.

Benefits:

1. superior diffs and axels (as per what you are trying to achieve)
2. a suspension setup that you can modify far more easily than a coily to get a better end result.

whos this? yea its an option although I kind of like the bling of the coilly. Id probably also end up making a small amount of money on it.
I havnt been at all unhappy with it so far exept for gearing.

As its always going to be a daily driver (at least til I finish uni) I probably wont be do anything extreme, however I enjoy talking about it.

Sell the coily  don't do it....

I believe there is more individualism in modifying a coily (I might borrow rbzooks flame suit). There is a well worn formula you can follow to get your leafy to perform but not so for a coily. People keep telling me I can't sucessfully mod my coily ZooK and that just makes me more determined.

coily's look better i rekon all the pretty bonnet and lights and grill

and tailgates that have handles and those cool raised stoplights, unlike my 84 model with no handle :D and coilys have a nicer inside aswell.

hey,
Has anyone thought off putting knukels off a leafy onto the coily housing, changing the high pinion to a low pinion center ( to fet a locker) and running the drag link infront instead off behind??????

IM thinkinh of trying this ass i have the parts

Cheers pazz
