Backward patrol conversion, can it be done?

Post by BOB_1 »

I have a pretty good GQ already(that I want to keep good) and am looking at something to take to places like Wesburn and Toolangi where my GQ is getting wrecked.eg mud in everything, dings, dents etc. I am interested in using it for more touring type trips like deserts and the Cape maybe next year so I want to keep it reliable.

SO - I want a bit of a beater,

My question is - Will the SD33T motor bolt up to a GQ gearbox in any way, Im up for a bit of fabricating, I have a really good SD33T motor (Just rebuilt) available and know of a shorty GQ petrol with a blown motor cheap i.e 3-4gs , pretty rough but would suit my needs, is there any way to get them to work together?

From what I can figure out, the little diesel is a reliable, reasonably cheap motor (Even cheaper considering I can get a good one for next to nothing) and would suit my budget beater 4x4 perfectly.

Any Ideas??

Firstly it would probably be illegal, putting an older motor in a newer car..... but if that doesn't bother you, why not run a MQ box? Much easier / cheaper to modify driveshafts than stuff around with the GQ Box.

Plus the GQ box is probably worth more than an MQ box, should make a profit.

So any ideas on fitting, would there be any way they would fit together with minimum modifications to the bits and pieces,

GQ gearbox because of the 5 speed,

Not really interested in selling the motor unless someone wants to swap it for a TD42 :D - I can get an MQ to put it in for even cheaper

I only really wanted to know whether it could be physically done before worrying about engineers and legalities.

There's a reason Toyota's used to be considered good. It's because Nissan hadn't released a GQ yet!!! I have an 89 model SWB you can have for $5300. Petrol. Car has done 150km, motor 90km. Rust problem in floor and rear gaurds.

There are no adapters to do the job.
U cannot bolt an SD33 do a GQ bellhousing.
If u use a MQ beelhousin, that bellhousing wont fit up to a GQ box so u need an MQ 5 speed mate.

Not to mention u have to modify all ur mounts etc.

But u cannot just bolt them up. It would be a one of custom bellhousing that u would have to get made, which is big dollars

Short of that, You will not be able to use the GQ bellhousing as it wont fit the SD33 at all, as they are a large motor, BUT if u get a SD33 bellhousing, u may be able get it re drilled / machined to fit the GQ gearbox bolts ( 6 of )
