What would be the best gauges to have for my GQ diesel? Not brands, but temp, voltmeter, ampmeter, etc???

Dont NEED any unless you feel you need them. I would start with voltmeter. Forget ampmeter.

yeah wasn't sure on which on is best, volt or amp. So i'll go a voltmeter. Can I have a switch so it measures both batteries?

Yes, just use a change over switch with feed from each +ve.
Normally though I just use from main just to show alt is working, ie, 13.5 volts and up dep on load etc.

If you want a volt meter, there is a Volt meter and in/out digital temp thing from jaycar that I brought and it seems to work pretty well. I also put a switch on the power lead so it does left and right batt's.

Cost was $39 from memory.

with the volt meter ,just make sure it is accurate.Ive tried 2 and they dont seem to be accurate,i have checked my multimeter against a few others so it seems the voltmeters i purchased are out.
If you get a temp gauge make sure you get a mechanical one.so much more accurate

go for a vacum gauge that way you can keep an eye on the vac to see if you have any leaks i have one it sits rite up the top of the gauge and if you come out in the morning and its down you know there is a leak some were
