what diff ratios????
what diff ratios????
hey guys.. id like some ideas/imput on diff ratios on my mav shorty. currently have 3.9 ratios, 4.2 auto on straight lpg, 33 inch mtr's.
i have found that the drivability has been shot to bits on the 33's. the overdrive is next to useless unless im doin about 130k/h plus. other day on way home from woolongong i was doin 150ks on my speedo and only had 2300 rpm on the tacho. down low is sluggish too....
i have sourced my self a pair of 4.3 (rear lsd) diff gears and a pair of 4.6 diff gears no rear lsd. what gears do u guys think i should run with? both sets are in good condition, and i could use my lsd out of the 3.9 ratios to make the 4.6 lsd. im planning to keep the 33's as my road tyres, but will be using 35's off road.
any ideas would be greatly apreciated...thanks in advance steve

id say go to 4.1's if you were going to stay at 33's
but if you wanna run 35's got the 4.3's,
but if you want your gearin a tad lower, go the 4.6's,
in the patrol, for each tire increase, increae to the next diff ratio
Most of those cars that came with 3.9 diff ratios also came out with only 29"tyres.
So then your upgrades should be very similar to the normal Patrol's ie
3.9 = 29"tyre
4.1 = 31"
4.3 = 33"
4.6 = 35"
If you plan on only running a 33" tyre 90% of the time go the 4.3's. Cos if you go 4.6 when running the 33's it will be reving about 300rpm higher and with a TB42 this really wouldn't help the economy.

i know of 2 '89 4.2 petrol patrols, my auto and a mates manual maverick, both 3.9 ratio, both originally had 31" tyres. the mav runs 35" tyres now, and still has the power for donuts in front of work.

no extractors or upper lube kit..but have 2.5 inch straight through exhaust system. is the upper lube kit worth fitting? gas mech said not neccessary in patrols.. already have stellite valve or valve seats...not sure. as for extractors.. any body wanna sell me some?
im tending toward the 4.3's..ill fit then tomoorow arvo to back diff and see how it feels.. then the 4.6 and feel the diffrence.. then match the front to the ratio of choice

This is what's weird with mine,
a) it came with 30" tread when I bought it 2nd hand
b) it should have come with 31" --> 4.1's
c) it has 4.6's ??
84 MQ SWB L28 --> did they all come with 4.6's for a reason or what?

a) wow
b) Its written on your compliance plate what it "came" with from factory
c) you have removed them to check this?
Going by the speedo (on a gps) and compared to someone else I figured it had 4.6's, I haven't taken the plate off to find out for sure though.
Where on the compliance plate does it say tyre size?

Foad if we where all talking about the same model of car it would make it easier. As we are talking about GQ's in the this thread.
If you need to work out what an MK/MQ had might be worth starting a new thread.
And yes some mavs came from the factory with 29" tyres (thats factory not dealer).

To make it even harder. I have known the previous owner for a long time and it is the combo he bought it with.
