Rear axle pre load

Post by duncan »

Have changed my rear drivers bearings before as they had no grease when pulled apart the outer most bearing was cactus replaced just pulled the rear axle down to fit a Airlocka and found the same axle has filed with water and mud and washed out all the grease im going to fit new bearings again question is how do you no when you have the bearings seated and preloaded as as far as i can remember you fitted the outer race to the housing then fitted the outer bearing then the oil seal then fitted that assemble to the axle no worries you then had to press the inner bearing into the the houseing what i want to no is how do you no how far to push it in last time just went by feel for pre load then its washer and nut put back in diff

Other question is can you fit the axle out of a drumm brake diff into a disc brake one and dose it have to be the drivers side looked the same to me

You just press them on using centre part same as any bearing until it seats. No preload to set on Disc ones.
Never opened drum ones.

What I was asking is after fitting the new outer race to the housing then putting in the new bearing then the new seal to retain it you then press the shaft through this hole assemble untill the bearing seats but how do you no when its down far enough cant remember wether there is a shoulder for it all to come up against so that it dosent matter how hard you push or if it just sits together and the further you push the shaft in the more pre load you putt on the outer bearing assemble

It doesnt change the preload as the inner and outer bearing is assembled as one piece.
