Diesel engines ? Whats a good choice
Just running idea's through to sort out some options, out of the 4 and 6cyl Jap diesels what is a good choice ?
looking for something that would be easy to swap into an old Jeep
Will be used mostly off road but needs to have enough grunt for highway work also so prob looking at one of the newer style engines maybe with turbo
Also what gear box options do these have or are you stuck with the jap gearbox to match ?
Any guide on price for a complete engine and accesories also
Was thiniking maybe the nissan 3.0 TD would be a good choice but let us know what are the best options available

I think this thread needs a budget and transmission preference.
Personally, I would look to a 13BT/14BT 15BTGMWODMRNOKX etcetcetc Dyna Motor, up to exhaust braked, intercooled, multivalved stuff.
I believe that all of these motors are "mechanical" i.e no black boxes to make them run.
There are 4speed, 5speed Manuals available and 3 and 4 speed autos, Including a 4speed auto/landcruiser transfer version.
There is plenty of potential in these motors.

Grab this!
http://www.pickles.com.au/servlet/Aucti ... =450258694
Got air con and a nice five-speed in it too; pretty sure it's this motor also found in pajeros:
Displacement, cc 2476
Engine model 4D56
Max.power (Net), kw(PS)/rpm 85 ps (62.52 kw) / 4200 rpm
Max.torque(Net), N*m(kg*m)/rpm 20.0 kg*m (196.13 N*m) / 2000 rpm
Power density 20.59
Engine type Serial 4 cylinder OHC turbo
Engine information
Fuel system Distribution type jet pump
Turbocharger Turbo
Fuel type Diesel
LEV system (Low emission vehicle) No
Compression ratio 21
Bore, mm 91.1
Stroke, mm 95
Just a thought; there are millions of options but for cheapness I wouldn't rule out vans instead of fourbies; nobody wants 'em for doing up!
EDIT: nb it is a 4wd, dunno the gearing though... and I have heard of the motors being put in Rocstas.

This is not legal advice.
I would fit one of the ISUZU diesels, very strong and reliable, and with good power and torque output.
I have a (factory fitted) ISUZU 4BD1 (3.9L 4cyl) in my 110 and it is a great engine, but if you want a newer engine:
There is the 4HF1 (4.3L 4cyl NA)
http://www.isuzu.co.nz/Engines/4hf1.htm
And the 4HE1 (4.7L 4cyl turbo)
http://www.isuzu.co.nz/Engines/4he1_T.htm
Apparently the ISUZUs also use SAE standard belhousing mountings so a number of Chev (and maybe even Jeep) belhousings will bolt up.

My stock Jeep engine is infact a GM 4cyl that has a Chev small block bolt pattern so you have now given me something to check out cause I was think that gear box and bell housing etc all would have to be changed

And where would one find engines like these??
Go hard or go home!!!

Truck wreckers. Or go to the damaged truck auctions if you want one cheaper (only problem then is you have to get rid of the rest of the truck).
They are fitted to the current generation of NPR and NKR trucks, which are pretty common in Australia. Only problem is the wreckers generally charge a fair bit for the engines.
Most of them come with 6 speed boxes too.

So Ben, these will bolt to what Rover bellhousings?
Unfortunately the only Rover ones they will bolt to are the special bellhousings made by Rover Australia to bolt the LT95 and the LT85 5-speed to the 4BD1/4BD1T.

The most powerful is the turbo intercooled 4HE1-XS
127KW (173BHp) and 458Nm.
Looks like it only revs to about 3000Rpm though.

One truck wrecker in Sydney area is http://www.nationaltruckspares.com.au/parts-isuzu.asp
The isuzu's have great torque all the way from idle. Largest manufacturer of small and medium diesels.

230kw ?
thats huge, would think it would be closer to 150
NO way would a diesel 4.1 be putting out that power without a whole sh1tload of sequential turbos.... or some major major boost enhancements.
not just a new exhaust methinks.
up2nogood wrote:Ben, is it only the ex military s111's that run the LT85 and 95 gearboxes?
Did they use the same t-case (LT230) as all the later cars?
Alex
Alex, all the military perentie 110's (4x4) run the 4BD1 and the LT95 (4 speed box and integral transfer case) - though the military version has a beefed up transfer case. The military 6x6's run the 4BD1T (turbo) with the same LT95.
There were also civillian 4BD1 LR's. Starting in 1982 the SIII Stage 1 (V8) was released with the 4BD1 instead of the V8 and the LT95 (with the std civillian T-case). Following this the 110 was sold with the same engine and box from 1984 to 1986 when the LT85 and LT230 were fitted instead of the LT95. This was produced until 1989.
All of these LT95's and LT85's had a special bellhousing (made in Australia) to adapt the 4BD1 to the box.

Personally, I too think that the claim for 230kw for the malaysian 15bt is a bit "rich" (pardon the terrible pun)
I reckon it is a healthy guestimation, and in the absence of any real technical information to justify this output, I'm guessing that the owner reckons it's making "twice factory power, as I believe that in dyna applications, It runs 115kw.
390NM of torque seems pretty low though, considering that KW is effectively torqueXRPM. - I;m guessing that the motor would make this figure stock.
As has been pointed out, Toyota uses this engine in the MegaCruiser, and in that application, it runs a large front mounted intercooler and a "group A celica GT4" turbo, and produces 141 KW.
That said, I have always reckoned that diesel Kw always feel heaps stronger than petrol KW so I would not be at all worried about 155KW, even before tuning.

I don't know anything about the 15B-FT motor, but 230kW at 4000 rpm does not sound plausable to me. It is within the realm of possible, but...
For 230kW at 4000 rpm the torque at that speed would be 549Nm. Normally I would expect a diesel making 549Nm at 4000 rpm would make more than 500Nm not 390Nm at 1800 rpm.
Why would anyone want to run a 4 cyl 4.1L diesel at 4000 rpm anyway!
