well, my back diff is leaking oil everywhere and its time to do something about it.
it' leaking from the pinion seal so i've got a new seal and want to have a go at whacking it in tomorrow. i've never done one before and people have told me that i'll neeed to re-torque the nut inside to a certain spec, while others have told me just to do it up with a rattle gun and it'll be right.
so anyone done a pinion seal in a vitara before and can give me some advice?

Rear pinion seal replacement
You will need a rattle gun and maybe an oxy for some heat on the nut as they are usally f(%king tight. But the seal is easy as too change and have some locktight on hand to put on the nut and do it up by spanner or give it a go with the ratttle gun.

DO NOT do it up with a rattlegun.
It's supposed to be done up to a pretty precise measurement. ( like in inch pounds) As you will affect the pinion depth if ou do it up tighter and squish the crush sleeve more.
Find yourself a manual and go it the way it suggests. The FSM (Factory service manual) for the sierra is only about $50 I assume the Vit one won't be much more and is money well spent if you ask me.

Location: in the sky , its a bird , its a plane ! No its super MOOSE !!!
IMHO , if there is no movement in the pinion , mark the nut & pinion !
undo it !!
either with a rattle gun , or some how lock the pinion flange & use big
fu(king socket & breaker bar !!!
remove u/s seal !
fit new seal !
check flange for any x-cessive wear grooves ( if you can feel the groove)
A. replace flange
B. fit correct size SPEEDI SLEEVE
then refit flange , & do nut back up to previously made markings !!!
p:s , if you can , count the No. of turns the nut comes off !!!!!!
my $0.02c worth !!!!
