Fitting Power steering to an 81 Hilux
I am keen to fit P/S to my 81 Hilux. Just woundering what is the best way to go about it ?
Should I just buy a setup of another one with P/S or are there other alternatives ?

how serious are you into 4wding?
if you just want factory style power steering you will need
power steering box
power steering pump
resivour
plumbing
if it is a diesel you will need to have the radiator modified if you want to mount the pump using factory braketry

or you could go to cross over style steering like that offered by snakeracing or chaos (soon i think)
i dont know a great deal on cross over as i still run factory style p/s so i will let others give you the low down on that

Basicaly once you go more then 3" of lift or have more than 8" of shock travel in the front you will need to go Crossover. there are other ways of doing it but if you need to buy the Power steer conversion you may as well buy the box only once.
Also the IFS boxes are a lot cheaper and easier to come by.
On average you will pay between $1000 and $1400 for a solid axle power steer conversion compared to around $650 to $850 for an IFS conversion.But then there are also other cost involved in the IFS conversion such as high steer arms and drag link.

For $1000 - $1400 I will be making something of a junk yard wreck fit ..... The hilux is my work ute and if I am going out to play I take my Buggy anyway as it gets more place that a soft old Toyota ( he he ) . So wheel travel will not be a real problem on it. I am just trying to make it a little more user friendly for my wife to drive.

Hey Brad maybe you should come out one day with the OUTERLIMITS Crew and show us how much further your buggy can go than a couple of our Toyotas
If you place an Add in the wanted section i know there are a few guys on here looking at going crossover soon so you may be able to buy a cheap solid axle power steering box and then you just have to buy a pump and lines.
For an '81 model you will also need the mount off the chassie to fit the power steer.
I gave my old power steer box away when i went crossover.

Because if he plans on getting real serious and chassing some big flex in the front then the stock steering wont handle it and he would be better off going cross over at the same time which requires a different style box.
this shits me big time - the parabolics are starting to work and i max my shock 9in travel approx and i have no control when twisting it up

No probs, once my new engine hits the magic 1500km mark I am keen to come out and have some fun. I am guessing it will have to be on rocks though as I would get sick of waiting for you guys if we play in the sand. BJ on roids has my contact details ( and most of my old cruiser junk he he ) .

Ok then no a body lift wont make a difference.It will with a 3" suspension lift. I know a lot of guys run this with stock steering but i guarentee that the steering is not working right like this.

is you're lux petrol or diesel - i was going to do p/s on my old LN46

the bracket for the frame mount

pump
change bottom radiator hose outlet
fluid resivor and hoses

the internals of the BJ42 box are slightly larger but can be swapped into the hilux casing? apparently.... as the yanks do this, but grab the minitruck gear and use it in the FJ40 boxes..... maybe this is an option!!

You mean building a pipe frame road registered car from scratch is harder than a P/S conversion.... interesting :> I am actually looking at power assisted R&P steering for the rock bug. The 16" rubber is getting a little big for the current setup.
Happy to play on all terrain, excluding deep water. The twin 44 IDF's don't like going under, neither does the engine, so nothing over 1m . Not that is matters casue I start to float at 700mm
